Reuters: Ukraine seizes stakes in strategic companies under wartime laws

KYIV (Reuters) -Ukraine said on Monday it had invoked wartime laws to take control of stakes in a top engine-maker and four other strategic companies from some of the country's richest men.

It was the first time the government had used martial law for such a move since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the move was needed to help meet the defence sector's urgent needs during the war.

It was also the government's most dramatic intervention of the war into big business, touching companies linked to tycoons whose political power Zelenskiy's team has long sought to curb.

Update: Ukraine seizes stakes in ‘strategic’ companies for war effort (Al Jazeera)

WNU Editor: There is going to be long term consequences from this action. No one will want to invest in Ukraine knowing that its government could seize it assets at a moment's notice.

This is why Putin has resisted demands from hardliners to seize the assets of Western companies that have left. He knows by not seizing their assets keeps the door open for them to eventually return to Russian once the war is over.

Ukraine isn't a "Democracy" any more than Russia is. Ukraine is likely more corrupt than any other European country. But it is surprising that Putin has resisted expropriating the assets of Western companies that have left Russia since last February. It goes against the train of thought that Russia will never trust The West again.

What is there to seize? There was steel plant in Mariupol. The Russians pummeled that to dust not the Ukrainians.

The Ukrainians government can turnover the assets back to private companies in 2 year. Perhaps the UN will provide funds. Perhaps we need to talk about a war indemnity against Russia.

It is time to throw Russia off the security council and replace it with nuclear power Japan.

Nah,

Time to recognize the old "spheres of influence" and real politic. We did not support the Hungarians in 56 or the Czechs in 68. What is the Ukraine to the US except another rat hole like Afghanistan or Vietnam to throw our money away. Let the Ukies and Ruskies eat each other. We have enough of our own problems.

And give Poland to Russia?

Lassie, why do you want to go back to the 19th century way of things?

Either invade Russia and break it up, or give half of Ukraine to Russia and let's get on with life...

Lots of Ruskies trolling here daring the US to turn a blind eye to further violence by them.

Yes lets attack the Russians. Better yet , lets launch without warning..But the split of ukie land may work if both sides agree. Or we could just launch without warning. Quicker, more efficient and solves the over population problem.

"Quicker, more efficient and solves the over population problem."

That right there shows conventional thinking. It shows someone has bought the party line without any independent corroboration or thinking.

There are two types of people that harp on climate change and over population. The dumb, who have not analyzed the numbers well and the cynical who do not care how the numbers turn out, they just want the power.

Take climate change. People like John Kerry and Al Gore talk of CO2 tipping points. Have you seen them get tough on China or India? No. Kerry and gore should be apoplectic. By now they said we had to cut a certain amount of carbon or we are doomed. Any carbon that has been cut by the west has been replaced by the east and then some.

That and Kerry & Gore live lavish lifestyles with huge carbon footprints.

AWG is a lie.

The same people who brought you AGW also brought zero population growth movement in the 1960s.

Here is one. Why do women have so may children in the 3rd world? I bet they like sex. Most people do. But time out for children put a crimp on that. They have so many children due to disease. Having lots of children ensure that some of them live to adulthood. The mavens in the West determined that DDT was bad and replaced it with half measures and worse.

The same type of people, who banned DDT, led the climate change efforts, etc.

the climate is not changing! insurance companies just want to raise rates for flood insurance

The risk to insurance companies is greater the more people build on the beach.

The more people democrat invite in, the more people will live on top of one another pr spread out like into flood plains.

my father said he once saw the Blue river burst its banks and reach the hilltops. It was a a partial exaggeration, but the hills are not that high there. That flooding was decades before a few rent seeking scientist began the Big Lie. flooding like that has not happened in several decades.

I found this.

https://cleantechnica.com/2017/05/15/can-say-climate-denier/

Nowhere does Harvey (an unfortunate name) show rates are going up. They probably are, but he skips it or didn't think of it.

Nowhere does Harvey show if more or less housing or other structures are built along the beach or on flood plains.

If you replace a bungalow on a beach front property with a high rise. The premiums there will rise quite dramatically.

A bungalow might have premiums of a few thousand a year. A high rise would be 5 or 6 figures per year. Dat wuld be moar zeroes!
