Bloomberg: Kissinger Sees War Over Taiwan Likely Unless US, China Back Down 

 (Bloomberg) -- Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said he believes military conflict between China and Taiwan is likely if tensions continue on their current course, though he still holds out for dialogue that will lead to deescalation — as he’s been urging. 

“On the current trajectory of relations, I think some military conflict is probable,” Kissinger said in an interview with Bloomberg News Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait, when asked about the possibility that China would invade Taiwan. “But I also think the current trajectory of relations must be altered.” 

The remarks, delivered as Kissinger looked back on his life and career soon after his 100th birthday, were some of his most downbeat about the state of relations between China and the US, which has vowed to back Taiwan in the event China attacks. Kissinger said it was up to both Washington and Beijing to step back from their standoff, which he said was at “the top of a precipice.”

Newsweek: Kissinger Predicts China Involvement Will Lead to Ukraine Peace Talks 

Henry Kissinger, a former U.S. secretary of state and national security adviser, said he believes the Russia-Ukraine war is coming to a turning point and expects negotiations by the end of the year thanks to recent efforts made by China. 

After several rounds of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in the early months of the conflict launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February 2022, neither side has seemed willing to return to the negotiating table. 

Beijing seemingly tried to reignite talks between Kyiv and Moscow with a 12-point position paper published on the one-year anniversary of the invasion. Along with calling for a ceasefire, the Chinese plan would leave Russian troops in occupied territories of Ukraine and put an end to any sanctions not approved by the U.N. Security Council, of which Russia is a veto-wielding member.

While warning that China shouldn’t become a global hegemon, the man who helped reestablish US-China ties in the 1970s said that President Joe Biden should be wary of letting domestic politics interfere with “the importance of understanding the permanence of China.” 

“Biden and previous administrations have been too much influenced by the domestic aspects of the view of China,” Kissinger, 99, said in an interview Tuesday in New York with Bloomberg News Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait. “It is, of course, important to prevent Chinese or any other country’s hegemony.”

Veteran US statesman Henry Kissinger has urged the West to stop trying to inflict a crushing defeat on Russian forces in Ukraine, warning that it would have disastrous consequences for the long term stability of Europe. 

The former US secretary of state and architect of the Cold War rapprochement between the US and China told a gathering in Davos that it would be fatal for the West to get swept up in the mood of the moment and forget the proper place of Russia in the European balance of power. 

Dr Kissinger said the war must not be allowed to drag on for much longer, and came close to calling on the West to bully Ukraine into accepting negotiations on terms that fall very far short of its current war aims.

Politico: Kissinger doesn’t see China as an immediate military threat to Taiwan 

He also lauded President Joe Biden for trying to lower the temperature of the U.S.-China relationship. 

Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said Sunday that even though China continues to covet Taiwan, he doesn’t expect China to launch an invasion of the island. 

“I don't expect an all-out attack on Taiwan in, say, a 10-year period, which is as far as I can see,” Kissinger said on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS.” 

Discussing President Joe Biden’s virtual summit last week with President Xi Jinping, Kissinger noted that the situation surrounding Taiwan is one that hadn’t changed much since he and President Richard Nixon established a connection with China in the early 1970s.

Former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger warned that competition between the US and China must not escalate to all-out hi-tech conflict, calling for policies to prevent Chinese hegemony while maintaining peaceful coexistence between the two nations. 

In an interview published this week in German newspaper Die Welt, Kissinger – who played a key role in paving the way for China and the US to establish formal diplomatic relations in 1979 – said it was critical to prevent the rivalry between China and the West from becoming an all-out conflict in artificial intelligence . 

At 97, Kissinger has declared himself a student of AI, saying “it is fascinating not only economically, but also philosophically, because it will change the nature of human thinking about reality, which will affect all of us”.

WNU Editor: I do not think the former US Secretary of State Kissinger really understands and/or appreciates on how aggressive Chinese foreign policy has become in the past few years. I would say this change started less than a decade ago with the building of military installations in the South China Sea, and since then Beijing has only escalated its border disputes with almost every country in the region. I have said it more than once on this blog that China is looking for a fight, and having Biden "opening communications" with Beijing is not going to change that.

(Bloomberg) -- Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said the U.S. and China must establish rules of engagement for their increasingly tense competition or risk recreating the uncertainty that characterized global politics leading up to World War I. 

“Our leaders and their leaders have to discuss the limits beyond which they will not push threats,” Kissinger, 97, said Wednesday in a virtual discussion hosted by the Economic Club of New York. “And then they have to find a way of conducting such a policy over an extended period of time.” 

“You can say this is totally impossible,” he added. “And if it’s totally impossible, we will slide into a situation similar to World War I.”

WNU Editor: In a ideal world Henry Kissinger's warnings make sense. But in the current situation I have doubts that this is workable. China has adopted a position to not compromise on key issues. China's position in regards to Taiwan is a textbook example on why Kissinger's hope that limits can be agreed upon will not work. To China the issue of Taiwan is non-negotiable. Taiwan is a renegade province that must be reincorporated back into China. Any moves by Taiwan to assert its independence and/or form deeper alliances with countries like the U.S. will mean war. In that environment how can you set limits to avoid a blow-up? There is none with the exception of one and that is bowing down and accepting China's demands. And if that is what happens you can then take this to the bank .... China will then want more.

Henry Kissinger, WSJ: The Coronavirus Pandemic Will Forever Alter the World Order

The U.S. must protect its citizens from disease while starting the urgent work of planning for a new epoch.

The surreal atmosphere of the Covid-19 pandemic calls to mind how I felt as a young man in the 84th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge. Now, as in late 1944, there is a sense of inchoate danger, aimed not at any particular person, but striking randomly and with devastation. But there is an important difference between that faraway time and ours. American endurance then was fortified by an ultimate national purpose. Now, in a divided country, efficient and farsighted government is necessary to overcome obstacles unprecedented in magnitude and global scope. Sustaining the public trust is crucial to social solidarity, to the relation of societies with each other, and to international peace and stability.

Nations cohere and flourish on the belief that their institutions can foresee calamity, arrest its impact and restore stability. When the Covid-19 pandemic is over, many countries’ institutions will be perceived as having failed. Whether this judgment is objectively fair is irrelevant. The reality is the world will never be the same after the coronavirus. To argue now about the past only makes it harder to do what has to be done.

The coronavirus has struck with unprecedented scale and ferocity. Its spread is exponential: U.S. cases are doubling every fifth day. At this writing, there is no cure. Medical supplies are insufficient to cope with the widening waves of cases. Intensive-care units are on the verge, and beyond, of being overwhelmed. Testing is inadequate to the task of identifying the extent of infection, much less reversing its spread. A successful vaccine could be 12 to 18 months away.

The U.S. administration has done a solid job in avoiding immediate catastrophe. The ultimate test will be whether the virus’s spread can be arrested and then reversed in a manner and at a scale that maintains public confidence in Americans’ ability to govern themselves. The crisis effort, however vast and necessary, must not crowd out the urgent task of launching a parallel enterprise for the transition to the post-coronavirus order.

Conflict between the United States and China will be “inevitable” and result in “a catastrophic outcome” that “will be worse than world wars” unless the countries settle their differences, according to former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger.

“We are in a difficult period now. I am confident the leaders on both sides will realise the future of the world depends on the two sides working out solutions and managing the inevitable difficulties,” he said at an event hosted by the National Committee on US China Relations in New York on Thursday.

“There is no doubt many aspects of the evolution of China are challenging to the US,” the 96-year-old said. “It never happened before that two major countries in different parts of the universe were in similar positions.”

WNU Editor: What's my personal take on Henry Kissinger. I see him as someone who represents China’s interests, and who is always trying to influence American foreign policy when it comes to Beijing. The fact that he is now coming out and voicing fears of a "catastrophic conflict" between the U.S. and China tells me that his "Chinese friends" are voicing to him their concerns on where the current trade war is heading. To put it bluntly. From the Chinese perspective this trade war is damaging, and they are telling Henry Kissinger to transmit the message that they want this resolved or else. WASHINGTON — Three former high-ranking State Department officials warned a Senate panel on Thursday that the United States is facing potential, catastrophic confrontations as global order erodes.

The United States is now in a national security race against time to prepare for the growing global destabilization, said the former secretaries, who have served under generations of presidents.

“The international situation facing the United States is unprecedented,” Henry Kissinger, the iconic former secretary of state, said in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee. This is “more than a coincidence of individual crisis across various geographies. Rather, it is a systemic failure of world order.”

Newsweek: If North Korea Is Preparing for Nuclear War, All of Asia Needs Nuclear Weapons, Says Henry Kissinger

In a recent interview with The New York Times, former Secretary of State and Cold War strategist Henry R. Kissinger warned that East Asia is racing towards nuclear proliferation.

The controversial former diplomat--whose critics charge with aiding and abetting military regimes in Latin America during his time as part of the Nixon Administration—said that a nuclear-armed North Korea is about to kickstart an arms race in which "nuclear weapons" will "spread in the rest of Asia."

“It cannot be that North Korea is the only Korean country in the world that has nuclear weapons, without the South Koreans trying to match it. Nor can it be that Japan will sit there,” he said. “So therefore we’re talking about nuclear proliferation.”

WNU Editor: Henry Kissinger has a point. The logic is that if North Korea develops a delivery system that can threaten a U.S. city with nuclear missiles carrying hydrogen bombs .... the U.S. would not intervene in a war against North Korea over fears that these missile would then be launched. In short .... would the U.S. be willing to lose 10 (or more) major cities to save South Korea and Japan from North Korean aggression. The answer is no .... at least that is what most South Koreans and Japanese believe .... even with all the assurances that Washington is now giving to both Seoul and Tokyo. Hence .... even with sanctions and international blow-back .... South Korea and Japan will quickly develop a nuclear deterrent. The prospect of being dictated and ruled by someone like Kim Jung-un is simply unacceptable for a mass majority of these people.

“China’s Belt and Road Initiative, in seeking to connect China to Central Asia and eventually to Europe will have the practical significance of shifting the world’s centre of gravity from the Atlantic to the Pacific and will involve the cultures of Eurasia, each of whom will have to decide what relationship to this region they will see, and so will the United States,” Kissinger said.

MOSCOW, June 29. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin will have a brief meeting with former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on Thursday.

"Kissinger is in Moscow on the occasion of his participation in the Primakov Readings (forum), which kicked off today," Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "His visit is used for a brief conversation (between Putin and Kissinger)."
