Russian President Vladimir Putin today signed a law revoking Russia's ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. 

The 1996 treaty outlaws all nuclear explosions, including live tests of nuclear weapons, though it never came into force because some key countries - including the United States and China - never ratified it.

The West has accused Russia of using reckless nuclear rhetoric since it launched its offensive on Ukraine last February.

The Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, one of Russia's most capable nuclear weapons, has been approved for active duty, Yury Borisov, the head of the Roscosmos space agency, has announced. 

The development was revealed on Friday during a Roscosmos event. The weapon is believed to be the longest-range and heaviest missile in the Russian nuclear arsenal.

Reuters: Putin Says Russia's New Sarmat Nuclear Missiles Soon Ready for Deployment 

MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia's new generation of Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads, would soon be deployed for combat duty. In a speech to new graduates of military academies, Putin stressed the importance of Russia's "triad" of nuclear forces that can be launched from land, sea or air. "The most important task here is the development of the nuclear triad, which is a key guarantee of Russia's military security and global stability," he said.

Putin warns interference would lead to 'such consequences that you have never encountered in your history' 

Russian President Vladimir Putin's implied warning that he could launch nuclear weapons against any country that interferes with his military campaign in Ukraine raises questions about just how seriously the West should take such threats. 

And while NATO allies, including the U.S., have assured they will not engage militarily in Ukraine, some experts suggest the Russian president's comments should not be taken as empty threats. 

"It is not something that he's just saying offhand because he's sort of trying to simply look tough," says James Cameron, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Oslo, where he is a member of the Oslo Nuclear Project specializing in arms control. "There is a rationale. There is the logic there."

WNU Editor: Here are my thoughts on Putin's recent comments when it comes to nuclear weapons. 

1) Russian President Putin only talks about nuclear weapons when a new "red line" has been crossed. 

2) Putin understands the current Western media and political narrative on Russia .... that according to the West Russia is brutal, criminal, hasty, disorganized, fractured, divided, weakening, and they are losing the war in Ukraine. A deteriorating military situation that will in the end force Russia to use nuclear weapons. 

3) The longer the war goes on and Russia does not use nuclear weapons will not only undermine the Western media and political narrative, but it will enhance Russia's global status as a responsible and stable global power. 

4) The West wants/hopes Russia will use nuclear weapons. That by provoking the Kremlin to use nuclear weapons will result in the fracturing of the growing alliance of countries that are now forming/developing around Russia and BRICS 

5) Putin's conditions on when Russia will use nuclear weapons was ambiguous and open to interpretations. He says nuclear weapons will be used when the existence of the Russian state was at stake. So what are the conditions when the state of Russian existence is at stake? Is it ground troops invading Russia, or is it when the 4 territories in Ukraine that Russia has annexed are in doubt. Putin does not say.

Belarus has already started taking delivery of Russian nukes, some of which President Alexander Lukashenko boasted are three times more powerful than the atomic bombs the US dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 

The deployment of tactical nuclear weapons is Moscow's first move of such bombs - which could potentially be used on the battlefield - outside Russian borders since the fall of the Soviet Union. 

 'We have missiles and bombs that we have received from Russia,' Lukashenko said in an interview with the Rossiya-1 Russian state TV channel which was posted on the Belarusian Belta state news agency's Telegram channel. 

'The bombs are three times more powerful than those (dropped on) Hiroshima and Nagasaki,' he said, speaking on a road in a forest clearing with military vehicles parked nearby and some kind of military storage facility visible in the background.

CBS News: Putin puts a date on his plan to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus

 Russia will start deploying nuclear weapons in Belarus when the necessary facilities there are ready there in early July, President Vladimir Putin told the Belarussian leader at a Friday meeting. 

It was the first time Russia's president has suggested a specific timeframe for his plans, announced in March, to deploy "tactical nuclear weapons" to the country just north of Ukraine, which is one of Russia's few allies in the region. 

"Everything is going to plan," Putin said in a televised portion of his meeting with Belarus' longtime authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko in Sochi, on Russia's Black Sea coast, adding that the two countries were deepening their cooperation on security.

RFE: Moscow, Minsk Sign Documents On Placing Russian Tactical Nuclear Weapons In Belarus  

Russia and Belarus have signed documents allowing for the placement of Russian tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, a move that has increased already strained tensions between the Kremlin and the West. 

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said after the signing in Minsk on May 25 that Moscow will maintain control of the weapons while on Belarusian soil. 

Russian President Vladimir Putin in March raised the prospect of Moscow deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus -- which borders Ukraine and three NATO nations -- by July, a move the authoritarian ruler of Belarus, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, has agreed to.

EurAsian Times: Russia’s Nuclear-Capable Tu-95, Tu-160 Bombers Deployed Near NATO Border As Tensions Escalate With Ukraine 

With Russia’s continuous use of its strategic bombers, including the Tu-95 and the Tu-160, for launching conventional stand-off attacks on Ukraine, satellite images have revealed that there has been an unexpected surge of these bombers in Russia’s north close to the NATO border. 

A fresh set of satellite images of the Olenya Air Base in Russia’s Kola peninsula revealed that about 16 strategic bombers had been deployed to this air base close to the NATO countries, Finland and Norway, The Barents Observer reported. 

The air base is located in the closed town of Olenegorsk-2, which is an hour’s drive south of Murmansk. The base currently houses 14 Tu-5 bombers, two Tu-160 bombers, and two Tu-22M bombers, besides other heavy transport aircraft, as could be shown in the satellite images.

As Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s war in Ukraine continues to rage, United States commanders and military observers are sounding the alarm about the activity of Russia’s submarine fleet thousands of miles away, off the U.S. coast. 

Throughout the war, which began when Putin launched a full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine last February, there has been a buildup of Russian Navy forces in the Black Sea.

MOSCOW (Reuters) -President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia would pay increased attention to boosting its nuclear forces by deploying a much delayed new intercontinental ballistic missile, rolling out hypersonic missiles and adding new nuclear submarines. 

A year since ordering the invasion of Ukraine, Putin has signalled he is ready to rip up the architecture of nuclear arms control - including the big powers' moratorium on nuclear testing - unless the West backs off in Ukraine. 

Putin on Tuesday sought to underscore Russian resolve in Ukraine by suspending a landmark nuclear arms control treaty, announcing new strategic systems had been put on combat duty and warning that Moscow could resume nuclear tests.

TASS: Putin says new ground-based systems were put on combat duty 

According to the Russian leader, NATO representatives are now giving Russia an ultimatum to comply with the New START (Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms) 

MOSCOW, February 21. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he had signed a week ago a decree on putting new ground-based strategic missile systems on combat duty. 

"The United States and NATO are directly saying that their goal is to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. Are they going to inspect our defense facilities, including the newest ones, as if nothing had happened? A week ago, for example, I signed a decree on putting new ground-based strategic missile systems on combat duty," he said in his State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on Tuesday. "They're going to stick their nose in there, too," the president continued, "Do they really think we're easily going to let them in there just like that?"

Russia is attempting to use its nuclear threat to weaken international support for Ukraine, according to Kyiv intelligence. 

The official Ukrainian Ministry of Defence reported via Telegram that Russia has started large-scale exercises involving its strategic nuclear forces, stationed for launch by air, land and sea, and put its units on the highest alert. 

The post, shared on Sunday, warned that Russia was planning to use 'blunt nuclear blackmail' to weaken foreign support and to stop Joe Biden's visit to Europe this week.

Jerusalem Post: Russia to modernize nuclear forces in 2023, add more multi-warhead nukes 

Russia to introduce new multi-warhead nuclear missiles in invasion of Ukraine Russia is bolstering its strategic nuclear forces in 2023 with further deployment of multi-warhead nuclear missiles and further modernization of its long-range strategic bomber division, the Russian Defense Ministry announced this week. 

The Strategic Rocket Forces branch of the Russian military is set to complete the replacement of the older Topol-M missile system with the RS-24 Yars among its mobile grouping, the ministry said on Tuesday. 

The Yars mobile ground missile system is a multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV), which contains several thermonuclear warheads, each of which can hit different targets.

EurAsian Times: 6000 KM Away From Ukraine, Russia Moves Its Nuclear Bomber Fleet From Engels Air Base To The Far East — Reports 

The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) have reportedly moved its long-range Tu-95 nuclear-capable bombers to a safe location in the far east, days after Ukraine launched a second strike on a Russian Air Force Base. 

Ukrainian government sources have claimed that at least six Tupolev Tu-95 “Bear” aircraft from Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) Long-Range Aviation (LRA) have been transferred from Engels-2 Air Base to Ukrainian-Seryshevo Air Base following three drone strikes in December. 

While Engels-2 is 600 kilometers to the east of Ukrainian-controlled territory, Ukrainka-Seryshevo is over 6,000 kilometers away from Ukraine.

The Russian ministry shared the video on Telegram on Thursday, saying that it showed the loading of an "intercontinental ballistic missile into silo launcher" in Kozelsk, a town in western Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 9 that Moscow could adopt what he described as a U.S. concept of using preemptive military strikes, noting it has the weapons to do the job.

Vladimir Putin's henchmen warned last night that the fighting in Ukraine could escalate into an 'all-out nuclear war' after America gave Ukraine the green light to launch drone strikes deep inside Russia. 

The Russian officials were responding to reports that the Pentagon had told Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky that he can launch the attacks within Russia, which the US previously advised against, fearing an all-out war between Russia and Nato. 

One source in Putin's circle said last night: 'This is playing with fire, risking full-scale war which could easily go nuclear.'

New Russian Submarine Successfully Test-Fires Bulava Ballistic Missile

Reuters: New Russian Submarine Successfully Fires Ballistic Missile -Defence Ministry 

(Reuters) - A new nuclear-powered submarine that is soon set to enter service with the Russian navy has successfully fired a ballistic missile as part of final testing, the defence ministry said on Thursday.

In a statement, the ministry said the Generalissimus Suvorov had launched a Bulava intercontinental missile in the northern White Sea with a dummy payload that reached a test site in the Far East Russian region of Kamchatka. The Bulava is designed to carry a nuclear warhead. 

The Generalissimus Suvorov is the second Borei-A class submarine to be built. Moscow says it is equipped with cutting-edge navigation, radio engineering, sonar, and missile and torpedo weaponry systems.

Vladimir Putin watched on today as Russia simulated a 'massive nuclear strike' with practice launches of ballistic and cruise missiles. 

The despot remotely observed the annual exercise, called 'Grom' or 'Thunder', which uses test launches to put Moscow's nuclear forces through their paces in a show of force to the West. 

Defence minister Sergei Shoigu reported to Putin that the drills were intended to simulate a retaliatory 'massive nuclear strike' by Russia.
