Russian President Putin Delivers Annual New Year’s Address To The Country

BBC: Vladimir Putin makes little mention of Ukraine in new year speech

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for united support of his army in his annual new year address, without explicitly referring to the war he is waging in Ukraine.

The Kremlin leader hailed his soldiers as "heroes... at the forefront of the fight for truth".

He also referenced economic issues, a key topic for many Russians, and declared 2024 the "year of the family".

The address was a more subdued affair than the previous year's.

A View From Moscow

Pepe Escobar, Startegic Culture: Moscow On The Rocks

Russia will not initiate a diplomatic dialogue. A sense of threat is very real in Russia. Diplomatic channels conveyed this message to the Americans.

And then, casually, almost as an afterthought while meeting Donbass heroes, Putin announces he will run for President again in next March’s elections. Considering his massive popularity – at least 80% nationally – he’s bound to remain in power until 2030.

Welcome to VVP-2024. Plenty of time for serial meetings with his dear friend Xi Jinping. The Russia-China strategic partnership – in charge of paving the road to multipolarity – is scheduled to be rocking more progressively than Emerson, Lake and Palmer in Tarkus (“Have you walked in the stones of years?”)

These have been heady days in dazzling, snowy Moscow. To start with, let’s go on a roll call of all those indicators which are being reluctantly admitted even by rabid NATOstan media.

Jead Of Russia's Security Council Warns The West Is Increasing The Risk Of Weapons Of Mass Destruction Being Used

Reuters: Putin ally: West increasing risk of weapons of mass destruction being used

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Nikolai Patrushev, a powerful ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on Wednesday that the "destructive" policies of the United States and its allies were increasing the risk that nuclear, chemical or biological weapons would be used.

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has led to the most serious confrontation between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, and the post-Cold War arms control architecture has crumbled.

The West says the war in Ukraine is a Russian imperial-style land grab. The Kremlin says the conflict is part of a broader struggle with a declining West which it accuses of sowing chaos around the world to try to maintain its dominance.

Patrushev said the post-Cold War order, including the dominance of the United States, was waning.

Russian Airport In Dagestan Stormed By Pro-Palestinian Protesters

BBC: Anti-Israel mob storms Dagestan airport in Russia

Israel has urged Russia to protect "all its citizens and all Jews" after a large mob stormed a Dagestan airport, some shouting antisemitic slogans.

Video footage apparently from the scene shows an angry crowd running in the airport in Makhachkala, reportedly seeking people arriving from Tel Aviv.

Some of the crowd ran onto the runway and surrounded aircraft there.

Russia's aviation agency said the situation was under control after authorities had arrived on the scene.

Russia Is Now Europe’s Biggest Economy In Terms Of Purchasing

RT: Russia becomes Europe’s biggest economy – report

The country’s GDP in PPP terms is outperforming that of Germany, according to World Economics

Russia was among the world’s five largest economies and the largest in Europe in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) as of the end of 2022, despite Western sanctions, the latest World Economics report has revealed.

According to estimates based on official country data published by the World Bank and the IMF, Russia's gross domestic product was $5.51 trillion in PPP terms at the end of last year. The figure is 38% larger than the official estimate of $3.993 trillion, the report noted.

It also showed that the Russian economy was ahead of Germany’s when measured in purchasing-power parity, with the latter’s GDP at $5 trillion.

The world does not only need Russia natural resources, but it is dependent on it. Sanctions have put a break on the Russian economy, but on the plus side hundreds of billions of dollars no longer leave Russia each year. There is also the expectation that when the war is eventually over the lifting of sanctions will follow, and when that happens the economic expansion that will then follow will be massive.

Politico: Russian defense minister says Wagner Group rebellion failed because of Russian troops’ loyalty

“These plans failed primarily because the personnel of the Armed Forces showed loyalty to their oath and military duty,” Sergei Shoigu said.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Monday the Wagner Group’s attempted rebellion failed because Russia’s army “showed loyalty to their oath and military duty,” marking the first time he has spoken out about the short-lived mutiny.

“These plans failed primarily because the personnel of the Armed Forces showed loyalty to their oath and military duty,” Shoigu said in public remarks. “The provocation did not affect the actions of the groupings of troops.” Russia responded to the rebellion by tightening security measures in Moscow.

The Russian 'Revolt' That Wasn't

Yevgeny Prigozhin, chief of the mercenary Wagner Group, in a video he released last weekend.

Seymour Hersh: Prigozhin's Folly: The Russian 'Revolt' That Wasn't Strengthens Putin's Hand

The Biden administration had a glorious few days last weekend. The ongoing disaster in Ukraine slipped from the headlines to be replaced by the “revolt,” as a New York Times headline put it, of Yevgeny Prigozhin, chief of the mercenary Wagner Group.

The focus slipped from Ukraine’s failing counter-offensive to Prigozhin’s threat to Putin’s control. As one headline in the Times put it, “ Revolt Raises Searing Question: Could Putin Lose Power?” Washington Post columnist David Ignatius posed this assessment: “Putin looked into the abyss Saturday—and blinked.”

U.S. Intelligence Says They Picked Up Intelligence In Mid-June Indicating Wagner Chief Yevgeniy Prigozhin Was Planning Armed Action In Russia

U.S. spies learned in mid-June Prigozhin was planning armed action in Russia © Alexander Ermochenko/Reuters

Washington Post: U.S. spies learned in mid-June Prigozhin was planning armed action in Russia

U.S. spy agencies picked up intelligence in mid-June indicating Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeniy Prigozhin was planning armed action against the Russian defense establishment — which he has long accused of bungling the war in Ukraine — and urgently informed the White House and other government agencies so they were not caught off guard, several U.S. officials said Saturday.

The exact nature and timing of Prigozhin’s plans were not clear until shortly before his stunning takeover of a military command and tank run toward Moscow on Friday and Saturday, officials said.

But “there were enough signals to be able to tell the leadership … that something was up,” said one U.S. official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the matter’s sensitivity. “So I think they were ready for it.”

Belarus President Lukashenko Says An Agreement Has Been Reached To End The Wagner Rebellion

RT: Wagner agrees to end ‘insurrection’ – Lukashenko

Evgeny Prigozhin agreed to halt his march on Moscow and avert “a bloodbath," the Belarusian president said

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced on Saturday that he had arranged a deal whereby Wagner Group leader Evgeny Prigozhin will abandon his mutiny in exchange for “security guarantees” for his fighters.

“Evgeny Prigozhin accepted the proposal of President Alexander Lukashenko to stop the movement of armed men of Wagner in Russia and take further steps to de-escalate tension,” read a statement from Lukashenko's office.

WNU Editor: It looks like it has ended. Prigozhyn will go and stay in Belarus (maybe), and Wager fighters will get some more money and recognition for their military achievements.

I am skeptical that Prigozhin will get a pass. But we shall see.

Russian milbloggers are now commenting on this agreement (see below):

“It Is Treason”. Russian President Putin’s Speech On The Wagner Group's Rebellion

WNU Editor: Busy since early this morning talking to friends, family, and contacts in Russia. The sentiment has been this (quoting one commentator) .... One thing is certain, everybody understands that it’s an internal power struggle no one is afraid of soldiers from either side … formally the same side.

Russian military blogs that I follow are saying this .... Prigozhin outlawed himself and PMCs Wagner. It's a pity, they are patriots and good soldiers.

The latest news that I have heard (which was 10 minutes ago) is that the Wagner convoy that was on its way to Moscow has stopped and they have not moved in the past few hours. Apparently a deal is being brokered.

I am skeptical of these reports. I think the commanders involved in this revolt have been given the choice of unconditional surrender or destruction, and have stopped to ponder their options. It is now evening where they are located, and I suspect they have until tomorrow morning to make a decision.

Wagner founder Prigozhyn's latest audio message is unfortunately escalating the crisis (see tweet below).

My prediction.

There is no support in Russia for what the Wagner Group is doing. There is certainly no support coming from any Russian military unit. Russian social media is also overwhelming against what the Wagner Group is doing. That is why I believe in the next 24 hours, seeing no support from the public and zero support from any Russian military unit, this Wagner group unit is going to surrender.

As for Wagner Group founder Prigozhyn. Needless to say. His future is grim. Treason is a capital offense in Russia.

Some personal thoughts.

There are many in Russia deeply frustrated by what they see is a "kid's glove" approach towards this conflict by the Kremlin. There are hardliners, including members of my own family, who want to do the same thing that the US did in the second Iraq war. Use heavy bombers and missiles to destroy all communication/electrical/transport/and all other critical infrastructure(s) in Ukraine. That means no power plants, no bridges, no communication towers, no rail hubs, and all critical Ukrainian government buildings in Kyiv and elsewhere left smouldering. Some of these hardliners are also pushing the idea of using tactical nuclear weapons to end the war quickly.

For now, the hardliners have little if any say in the operational plans and actions of the Russian military in Ukraine. But if they should gain a voice at the table, and if some of Prigozhyn demands and conditions are met, expect a massive escalation in the war in Ukraine.

I shudder at the military and civilian death toll that will then result if these people gain any power. I also know these hardliners are not going to stop until the Russian army is at the borders of Poland/Hungary/and Romania. The Western press may applaud what some elements of the Wagner Group are doing, but it is these same people who will cause even more destruction in Ukraine if they win out over Putin in this power struggle.

For now I give this rebel group zero chance of succeeding. But they are a sign that the sentiment in Russia to escalate the war is growing.

Russia Jails Three Hypersonic Rocket Scientists On Charges Of Treason

Reuters: Russia says hypersonic missile scientists face 'very serious' treason accusations

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Three Russian academics who have worked on hypersonic missile technology face "very serious accusations", the Kremlin said on Wednesday, in a treason investigation that has spread alarm through Russia's scientific community.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he was aware of an open letter from Siberian scientists in defence of the men, but that the case was a matter for the security services.

In the letter, published on Monday, colleagues of Anatoly Maslov, Alexander Shiplyuk and Valery Zvegintsev protested their innocence and said the prosecutions threatened to inflict grave damage on Russian science.

"We know each of them as a patriot and a decent person who is not capable of doing what the investigating authorities suspect them of," they said.

Russia Continues To Make Payments On Sovereign Debt On Time

RT: Russia makes payment on sovereign debt

According to the country’s settlement depository, Moscow fulfilled its obligations on Friday

Russia’s Finance Ministry announced on Friday it has settled two issues of dollar-denominated Eurobonds “in full” by sending 17 billion rubles ($221.1 million) in coupon payments to the National Settlement Depository (NSD).

According to the ministry, the payments were on Eurobonds maturing in 2030.

“Thus, obligations on servicing the state securities of the Russian Federation were fulfilled by the Finance Ministry in full,” the statement said.

Her answer was .... we would immediately find ourselves in a financial/banking crisis.

Wow!

I guess that explains why all the talk in 2022 from Western governments and its leaders to force Russia into default has all but disappeared since the start of the current banking crisis with the collapse of Credit Suisse and a number of major US banks.

Russia Assumes UN Security Council Presidency

BBC: Russia assumes UN Security Council presidency despite Ukrainian anger

Russia has taken the presidency of the UN Security Council despite Ukraine urging members to block the move.

Each of the council's 15 members takes up the presidency for a month, on a rotating pattern.

The last time Russia had the presidency, February 2022, it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

It means the Security Council is being led by a country whose president is subject to an international arrest warrant for alleged war crimes.

The International Criminal Court - which is not a UN institution - issued the warrant for Vladimir Putin last month.

Russians were warned today to take anti-radiation pills and rush to their nearest nuclear bomb shelters after hackers compromised state television servers to broadcast chilling messages.

Russian President Putin Signs Decree For Defense Firms If Martial Law Is Declared

Bloomberg: Putin Orders New Rules for Defense Firms in Case of Martial Law

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree Friday laying out new rules for tightening control of companies that fail to fulfill defense contracts in the event martial law is imposed, the latest step in the Kremlin’s preparations for militarizing the economy as its invasion of Ukraine stretches into a second year.

Under the decree, the state would get the power to take over firms that fail to meet their obligations under military contracts during the period of martial law, suspending the rights of owners and shareholders.

A government working group is to be set up on the operations of arms companies under martial law, according to the order, the text of which was published Friday.
