Reuters: The Global Nuclear Arsenal Grew Last Year, SIPRI Says 

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -The number of operational nuclear weapons rose slightly in 2022 as countries implemented long-term force modernisation and expansion plans, a leading conflict think-tank said on Monday, warning that the world was entering a dangerous phase. 

The estimated number of warheads in military stockpiles for potential use rose by 86 to 9,576, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in a statement, continuing a trend seen in the last few years. 

"We are drifting into one of the most dangerous periods in human history," said Dan Smith, SIPRI Director.

Over 75 years have passed since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and more than 12,000 nuclear warheads are still scattered across the world from silos in Montana to isolated corners of European airbases and even to the ocean depths where ballistic missile submarines lurk as a deterrent nearly impossible to detect. 

Hiroshima was the first of two atomic bombings in 1945 and it involved a 15-kiloton device while the weapon used in the attack on Nagasaki three days later had a 22 kiloton yield. Modern nuclear warheads are far more powerful with the U.S. Trident missile yielding a 455 kiloton warhead while Russia's SS ICBM has an 800 kiloton yield.

Apparently it's no longer just about tanks and fighter jets for Ukraine: According to Polish General Waldemar Skrzyptzak (67), the government in Kiev is said to have nuclear weapons once again. Other experts believe that even if they do not have such a weapon now, they'll have one soon. 

Warsaw: In an interview, one of Poland’s best-known military officers gave an analysis of where Europe might be headed in the war in Ukraine: General Waldemar Skrzyptzak said in an interview with radio station Wnet that President Zelensky’s government probably already has nuclear weapons. 

This was not absurd, explained the general: “Ukraine has officially had no nuclear weapons since the early 1990s, when it agreed to hand them over to Russia under international agreements. Now the reality could be very different.”

The US has lost at least three nuclear bombs that have never been located – they're still out there to this day. How did this happen? Where could they be? And will we ever find them?

Newsweek: U.S. Nuclear Weapons Spending Compared to China and Russia 

Last year, the world's nine nuclear-armed states—the U.S., Russia, Britain, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea—spent $82.4 billion collectively on their nuclear arsenals, a new report by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has revealed. 

That's an inflation-adjusted increase of approximately $6.5 billion from the previous year, where these countries had collectively spent $76 billion on their nuclear arsenal, according to ICAN. 

This increase in spending shows that despite a general ongoing trend of declining nuclear inventories, the nuclear-armed states have continued to invest in modernizing and improving their nuclear arsenals, as well as funding companies and think tanks writing about nuclear policies to support these huge spending budgets. 

The U.S. tops the ICAN's list of nuclear spending for 2021, with $44.2 billion spent on its nuclear weapons.

Poland's Deputy Prime Minister Says He Is "Open" To The Idea Of The U.S Deploying Tactical Nuclear Weapons In His Country

Newsweek: NATO's Poland 'Open' to Hosting U.S. Nuclear Weapons 

Poland's deputy prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said he is "open" to the idea of the U.S deploying tactical nuclear weapons in his country, and called for Washington to send tens of thousands more American troops to Europe to check the Russian threat. 

Kaczynski, who leads the ruling national-conservative Law and Justice Party, also urged NATO to "do more" in Ukraine—in particular, a peacekeeping mission and delivering President Volodymyr Zelensky the weapons he asks for—and said he is "very dissatisfied" with Germany. 

"The eastern flank must be much better protected in the future than before," Kaczynski told Germany's Welt Am Sonntag newspaper, asking America to station 50,000 more troops—a 50 percent increase—with most of the total in the Baltics and Poland, which are NATO allies.

(Bloomberg) -- A tiny Pentagon contract for an influential Washington think tank to study the nation’s nuclear arsenal is sparking outsized congressional scrutiny, in a prelude to a bigger fight over whether to spend billions of dollars buying new intercontinental ballistic missiles. 

The $75,000 contract awarded in December to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will result in a five- to seven-page unclassified paper later this month examining “the relative risks and benefits of various options regarding the land-based leg of the U.S. nuclear triad.” 

Citing previous studies and bipartisan congressional support for new ICBMs, the top Republicans on the House and Senate Armed Services committees -- Representative Mike Rogers of Alabama and Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma-- backed language in the $768.2 billion defense policy bill that President Joe Biden signed last month demanding documents on any contract studying whether to extend the service of aging Minuteman III missiles first deployed in 1970 or on “the future of the intercontinental ballistic missile force.”

* China's rapid military expansion in recent years has alarmed other countries. 

* China's nuclear arsenal is much smaller than the US's, but US officials are warning about its growth. 

* Experts say Beijing wants to have enough nuclear weapons to survive and respond to an attack. 

The US Department of Defense's annual report on China's military, released in November, again illustrated the breathtaking pace and scale of China's conventional military modernization. 

This year's report also highlighted a number of developments that could threaten the US more directly than China's conventional forces — namely China's "large-scale expansion of its nuclear forces." 

That expansion is well documented. The Pentagon's 2020 report on China's military noted that Beijing's stockpile of nuclear warheads would at least double by the end of the decade.

A day after world powers jointly pledged to avoid nuclear conflict, signatory Beijing has conceded it is "modernizing" its own arsenal. But it denied allegations from the United States that it was enlarging it at speed. 

China said on Tuesday it was continuing to "modernize" its arsenal of nuclear weapons, but argued that this was only to ensure that it met its minimum requirements for national defense.

"China has always adopted the no first-use policy, and we maintain our nuclear capabilities at the minimal level required for our national security," said Fu Cong, the director general of the Foreign Ministry's arms control department.

In the past decade, Russia has made a number of breakthroughs in the development of nuclear weapons and their delivery vehicles, significantly outstripping Washington in several areas. 

 Russia and the US maintain quantitative parity in strategic weapons, whilst having different structures. However, the US leadership is extremely concerned that it lags behind Russia in the field of advanced missile defense systems. This stems from having underestimated Russian military potential and spent too heavily on armed conflicts (primarily in Afghanistan and Iraq), which ate up about $100 billion annually. After the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and the significant drawdown in Iraq, the situation is starting to change. The US defense budget for 2022 will see substantial funds allocated for development of new weapons, including strategic ones.

While the US is currently treaty limited with Russia to deploy up no more than 1,550 nuclear warheads, China is under no such restrictions 

China is building nuclear warheads at an "accelerating pace" and will have 1,000 by the end of the decade, according to the Pentagon's new China report released Wednesday after a two-month delay. 

Just a year ago in the last China report, the Pentagon had estimated China’s nuclear arsenal to be in the "low-200s" and would "at least double" over the next decade. 

The new report demonstrates China is expanding much more rapidly. 

"The accelerating pace of the PRC’s nuclear expansion may enable the PRC to have up to 700 deliverable nuclear warheads by 2027. 

The PRC likely intends to have at least 1,000 warheads by 2030, exceeding the pace and size the DoD projected in 2020."

When I first started this blog (over a decade ago) I was always saying that China's ultimate goal was to be the primary military super-power in the world. Or to put it bluntly. This has always been China's ultimate goal .... Researchers say China is constructing 300 possible missile silos, which could make its nuclear arsenal bigger than Russia's or America's (Insider). 

Blaming former President Trump for this arms buildup, which this Pentagon report claims, ignores the fact that it takes years of planning and development to massively expand a nuclear arsenal .... China has upped nuke production, it worried U.S. would start war before 2020 election, report says (NBC). this was in motion before Trump was even President.

My guess is that the decision to expand it's nuclear arsenal occurred over a decade ago when Beijing made the decision to allocate an enormous amount of funds to build up its conventional AND nuclear forces. 

A build-up that the US national security establishment is only now publicly acknowledging on how big it is.

When a bomb goes off, energy is shot out indiscriminately in all directions. So, instead of an expanding ball of fire, why do nuclear explosions result in mushroom clouds? 

Although the outburst of energy does initially form a sphere of hot air, that's only the beginning of the story, according to Katie Lundquist, a researcher of computational engineering at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. Because hot air rises, the larger bulk of the sphere in the middle column — where the core of an apple would be — experiences more buoyancy than the edges do.

DW: SIPRI warns of trend reversal in nuclear weapons decline 

World powers such as the US, Russia and China are rapidly modernizing their nuclear arsenals, researchers from SIPRI said in a new report. 

Although the world's overall stockpile of nuclear weapons has decreased since last year, the number of operationally deployable weapons is on the rise, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in its Yearbook report published on Monday.  

What did the report say? 

At the beginning of 2021, the US, Russia, the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea possessed a total of 13,080 nuclear warheads, a decrease of 320 from the previous year. 

These figures include retired warheads which are set to be dismantled. Without those retired warheads, the total global arsenal rose from 9,380 to 9,620 from 2020 to 2021. 

At the same time, the report says the number of deployable weapons increased from 3,720 to 3,825 over the previous year. These weapons are either mounted on missiles or located on active bases.

An international treaty banning all nuclear weapons that has been signed by 51 countries and that campaigners hope will help raise the profile of global deterrence efforts comes into force on Friday. 

Although in some respects the step is largely symbolic because the world’s nuclear powers have not signed up, the treaty will be legally binding on the smaller nations that have endorsed it, and it is backed by the UN leadership. 

The treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons (TPNW) outlaws the creation, ownership and deployment of nuclear weapons by signatory states and places obligations on them to assist other victims of nuclear weapons use and testing.
