WNU Editor: I am not a fan of Noam Chomsky, but he is right that with the exception of former Presdient Trump there is no Western leader pushing for a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine rather than looking for ways to fuel and prolong it.Chomsky says he regards Trump as a deeply dangerous figure, yet he is "the one statesman in the West who has said it, and it's the right way out."

Warzone/The Drive: U.S., French, U.K. Nuclear Submarines Rendezvous In Scotland
The unusual multinational submarine gathering comes at a time of unprecedented tensions in Europe around Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The U.K. Royal Navy's main submarine base in Scotland appears to currently be hosting something of a small multinational submarine meet. Yesterday, U.S. Navy's Virginia class nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Indiana was spotted heading in the direction of Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde. That came a day after one of the French Navy's Rubis class submarines, another nuclear-powered attack type, the specific identity of which is unknown, was seen arriving in the area.

EU Postpones A Russian Oil Ban Until The End Of The Year
Europe wants to ban Russian oil, but cutting off supplies is an economic and political nightmare
Reuters: EU leans towards Russian oil ban by year-end, diplomats say
BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Union is leaning toward a ban on imports of Russian oil by the end of the year, two EU diplomats said, after talks between the European Commission and EU member states this weekend.
The European Union is preparing a sixth package of sanctions against Russia in response to the invasion just over two months ago of Ukraine that Moscow calls a special military operation.
The package is expected to target Russian oil, Russian and Belarusian banks, as well as more individuals and companies.
The Commission, which is coordinating the EU response, held talks dubbed "confessionals" with small groups of EU countries and will aim to firm up its sanctions plan in time for a meeting of EU ambassadors in Brussels on Wednesday.
EU energy ministers are also due to meet in the Belgian capital on Monday to discuss the issue.

In Another Sign That Europe's Energy Crisis Will Get Worse, France’s Nuclear Shutdown Hits 50% Of Reactors
Bloomberg: France’s Nuclear Shutdown Hits 50% of Reactors
(Bloomberg) -- The halt of yet another nuclear unit in France means half of its reactors are now offline for maintenance, keeping power supplies tight in a country that is traditionally one of Europe’s biggest electricity exporters.
Twenty-eight reactors are offline as Electricite de France SA struggles with extended outages after corrosion issues were found at some sites, requiring lengthy checks and repairs. The extra works come on top of already scheduled halts for refueling and regular maintenance, and has brought French nuclear output to the lowest in more than decade for the time of year.
