Catalan officials have claimed that preliminary results of its referendum have shown 90% in favour of independence in the vote vehemently opposed by Spain.

Jordi Turull, Catalan regional government spokesman, told reporters early on Monday morning that 90% of the 2.26 million Catalans who voted Sunday chose yes. He said nearly 8% of voters rejected independence and the rest of the ballots were blank or void. He said 15,000 votes were still being counted.

WNU Editor: The official position from Madrid is that the referendum did not take place .... there was no vote for independence. But looking at the massive numbers of those who did go out to vote coupled with the brutal police crackdown to stop the vote .... the government of Spain has definitely lost its claim to legitimacy in Catalonia.

The Madrid government should embarrass the EU and NATO. Outlawing opposition political parties, declaring votes illegal, refusal to negotiate or converse. This has taken place in the Basque Country, Catalonia, etc. for years now.
