The Guardian: US says it will send troops to eastern Europe if Russia invades Ukraine

On eve of talks between Biden and Putin, European leaders say they have agreed to present a ‘united front’ on aggression towards Ukraine

The US has said it would send reinforcements to Nato’s eastern flank in response to a Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as imposing severe new economic measures, in a warning to Moscow on the eve of talks between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin.

Biden will also make clear to Putin on Tuesday that the US will not rule out future Ukrainian membership of Nato, as the Russian leader has demanded, a senior US official said.

On Monday, Biden spoke to European leaders in preparation for the Putin summit. Afterwards, Boris Johnson said that they had agreed to present a “united front” on Ukraine.

Why is this admin so confrontational with Russia over Ukraine but so soft with Iran over it's nuclear program? Seems inconsistent.

So soft with Iran, Alex? Have you noted the state of their economy?

Downy Soft Joe dropped a sanction two days before the talks began and still came away with nothing after a week.

The US has been sanctioning Iran for decades, so you cannot credit the current administration with crippling Iran economically. Even if you could, the 'state of their economy' has not deterred further enrichment far and beyond what is necessary for nuclear energy.

So the the current administration is continuing policies already in place from previous administrations, and has yet to accomplish anything furthering US interests, while watching enrichment continue. Relative to achieving outcomes, yes, the current admin is thus far completely soft on Iran.

Pretty much spot on. We need to he very circumspect about shooting anyone but we do need to stop the needless provocations.

No one ever suggested Russia is an ally of the US. Obviously we Confront them where we must but needless provocations don't advance our interests and undermine them. Both we and Russia have issues with China. Former president Trump was right to seek cooperation with Russia.

It does. Israel will take care of the Iranian nuclear program so no worries there. If they don't, that's an existential threat to us. In contrast, we have no interests in Ukraine beyond perhaps protecting a few corrupt business deals and maybe a distraction used to keep members of our leadership class out of prison. It's certainly not worth war with Russia.

It's bad management on the part of the Iranian leadership. We aren't responsible. They can blame us though which helps their messaging.
