The EU Say They Have A Plan To Break Their Dependence On Russian Natural Gas

Washington Post: E.U. will unveil a strategy to break free from Russian gas, after decades of dependence

For years, Europe’s dependence on Russian energy has held it back from taking powerful action against Kremlin mischief. But now, the Russia-Ukraine crisis is forcing a change unlike any before, driving the European Union to make plans for a permanent, far-reaching break from Russian oil and gas, European policymakers said.

The strategy to split from Russian energy, expected to be announced by the European Commission next week, would give Europe a freer political hand against Russia than it has had in the past. It would take years and come with a hefty bill for European taxpayers. But it comes with the crucial backing of Germany, a nation so entangled with Russia that one of its former chancellors, Gerhard Schröder, is the chairman of Rosneft, Russia’s biggest oil company.

WNU Editor: I have been hearing this talk about energy independence and shift towards renewables while breaking away from Russian energy for decades.

What has always stopped this shift has been costs and reliability.

I expect this new EU strategy will be more of the same but with one exception. They are going to bust their budgets and spend unbelievable amounts of money in the hope that this will solve their energy  problem.

My prediction on what is the future of this plan can be best summed up by a quote that has been attributed to Albert Einstein (see below).

Those LNG tankers have the explosive force of 775 kilotons of TNT. Hiroshima yielded 15 kilotons. You can imagine the hysteria in Brussels if that were to ever happen in or near a major European harbor.

An LNG tanker or a regular tanker have dep drafts. You cannot sail them up just any creek or rivulet made by your garden hose.

There are different types of ports and port facilities. One of those would be an LNG terminal

The LNG terminal for Brussels is at Zeebrugge. Zeebrugge is about 100 kilometers from Brussels.

A lot of force of nature obey the inverse square law. Meaning the force of an explosion falls off quickly. If you are at Zeebrugge, you will have a bad day. If you are at Brussels the windows will rattle and some might break. But Brussels will still be there and everyone will be alive.

Zeebrugge already handles LNG tankers

More gas can be brought into Europe via Italy, Sicily or Spain from The Algerian gas fields. Much already is.

Gas could be brought in from UAE via Israel and Cyrus, if Joe Biden would get out of the way, and stop sanction threats.

Solar reliance in northern latitudes is madness. Earths 23 degree tilt makes solar impractical in winter months. Duh.
Germany has the Greens as coalition partners, madness will be a pre-requisite to any energy proposals.
