I have seen the videos allegedly showing Ukrainian soldiers shooting and torturing Russian POWs. They are making the rounds on Russian social media with hundreds of thousands of views (if not more). Needless to say the Russian government is permitting the widespread dissemination of these videos as a warning to Russian soldiers on why they should not surrender. And while it is impossible to independently verify the content of these videos, I concur with a BBC reporter's conclusions that the Criminal Court will need to expand its investigations.

Update: This follows a recent Ukrainian TV report of a doctor ordering his staff to castrate Russian prisoners .... Ukrainian doctor tells TV interviewer he has ordered his staff to CASTRATE Russian POWs because they are 'cockroaches' (Daily Mail).

In wars, the military is very often doing bad and illegal things.
a distinction perhaps needs to be made between that which is done to enemy combatants and nonmilitary civilians.

I have counseled my kids that if they are on the losing end that it is best not to be the first one to throw their hand up. When people's blood is up they are liable to kill you anyway.
The doctor is not in the heat of battle. When caught, he needs to sever a 20 to 30 years sentence and then executed painfully. I have read a lot about ancient and medieval times. I can think of a lot of things which are best left unsaid.
Invaders come to your town and neighborhood and destroy everything in sight that including non-combatants and children, their homes, and shelters. Who can blame them.

You could use game theory to work out what happens, if Ukraine engages in war crimes if they win and if they do not win.

Prayers for the Russian prisoners. Justice for the war criminals torturing the soldiers. Ukraine is not the good guys here, if they ever were.
The anger of the Ukrainians against the Russian invaders is understandable, but any acts taken like this is wrong and stupid. You want Russian soldiers to surrender to you, not fight back because they fear what will happen to them if they surrender. You also want to avoid providing Russia any pretext for doing the same to Ukrainian POWs.
But even in the best armies, revenge killings and torture happen. Hopefully what we are seeing are a very small minority of Russian POWs, and the Ukraine military will reimpose discipline on any troops who do this.
