ICC warrant for Russian president’s arrest issued in March over alleged war crimes in Ukraine
South Africa has issued blanket diplomatic immunity to all leaders attending an August summit, meaning Vladimir Putin might be able to travel to Johannesburg and not fear the country acting on an international criminal court warrant for his arrest.
South African officials insisted the broad offer of immunity, issued in a government gazette, may not trump the ICC arrest warrant. As an ICC member, South Africa would be under pressure, and possibly under a legal requirement, to arrest Putin. The court issued a warrant for his arrest in March over the alleged forcible deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia.

France 24: Former Kosovo president Thaci pleads not guilty as war crimes trial begins
Former Kosovo president Hashim Thaci led a bloody campaign against opponents that resulted in more than 100 murders during the 1990s independence war against Serbia, the start of his war crimes trial heard Monday.
Thaci and three other top members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) rebel group all denied 10 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity as they appeared at a special tribunal in The Hague.
While Thaci and the others went on to be seen as guerrilla heroes, prosecutors said the ethnic Albanian KLA openly enforced a brutal reign of imprisonment, torture and killings to tighten their grip on power during and after the 1998-1999 war.

Anadolu Agency: Arrest warrant against Putin to be executed if he comes to Germany, says German justice minister
On Friday, International Criminal Court issued arrest warrant for Russian president
German Justice Minister Marco Bushman has said that he will execute an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin if he sets foot on German soil.
"I expect that the International Criminal Court in The Hague will swiftly approach Interpol as well as the contracting states and ask them for enforcement," Bushman told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday.
According to Bushman, Germany would then be obliged to detain Putin if he enters German territory and hand him over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
Even before Bushman, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had welcomed the ICC arrest warrant against Putin during his trip to Japan on Saturday, saying that "no one is above the law."

International Criminal Court Issues Arrest Warrant For Russian President Putin For Ukraine War Crimes

The International Criminal court has today issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over his barbaric invasion of Ukraine.
The ICC accused Putin of being responsible for war crimes because of his involvement in the abduction of children from Ukraine.
The court said in a statement that Putin is allegedly 'responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.'

France has become the first major western state to publicly back the creation of a special tribunal to try senior Russian officials – potentially including Vladimir Putin – for the crime of aggression in Ukraine.
The French foreign ministry said on Wednesday that it was working with its European partners on the proposal.
The statement came after the European Union and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, lent support for the tribunal in a speech on the bloc’s plans for Ukraine.

* Major U.S. and European banks should be prosecuted for “committing war crimes” over their financing of the Russian regime, according to a top aide to Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
* Oleg Ustenko, economic advisor to Zelenskyy, said the Ukrainian government believes banks, such as JPMorgan, HSBC and Citi, are aiding the Kremlin’s war efforts in Ukraine.
* “Everybody who is financing this war criminals, who are doing these terrible things in Ukraine, are also committing war crimes in our logic,” he told CNBC’s Hadley Gamble on “Capital Connection” on Tuesday.
Major U.S. and European banks should be prosecuted for “committing war crimes” over their financing of trade with the Russian regime, according to a top aide to Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

New York Times Verifies Video Showing Ukrainian Soldiers Shooting Captured Russian Troops With Their Hands Tied Behind Their Backs
Video published on Wednesday shows Ukrainian soldiers killing their Russian counterparts with their hands tied behind their backs
* The video, which the New York Times verified Wednesday, shows Ukrainian troops committing the killings after what appeared to be an ambush
* 'Film these marauders. Look, he's still alive. He's gasping,' one of the troops is heard saying
* One of the soldiers then shoots the man three times. After the second shot, the man keeps moving but stops after the third bullet
* There appear to be at least three other Russian soldiers dead lying near the latest victim
* The video was taken from a road just north of Dmytrivka, about seven miles southwest of Bucha
Video published on Wednesday shows Ukrainian soldiers killing their apparently captured Russian counterparts with their hands tied behind their backs - just as accusations of similar atrocities committed by Russian forces surface from the city of Bucha.
The video, which the New York Times verified Wednesday, shows Ukrainian troops committing the killings, after what appeared to be an ambush outside a village west of Kyiv.
'He's still alive,' one of the Ukrainians - identifiable by their flag patches and 'glory to Ukraine' paraphernalia - can be heard saying, as a Russian soldier is seen with a jacket pulled over his head. 'Film these marauders. Look, he's still alive. He's gasping.'

* He said they had carried out 'despicable attacks against innocent civilians' in Bucha and Irpin, close to Kyiv
* Former heavyweight champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko visited Bucha to accuse Putin of 'genocide'
* His comments come after mass graves filled with civilian corpses were found after Russian troops left the city
* Russia's defence ministry has denied accusations of Russian troops killing civilians in suburban town of Bucha Moscow was accused of genocide last night after retreating Russian forces left behind horrific evidence of rapes, civilian executions and mass graves.
The barbarity of Vladimir Putin's soldiers was compared to the atrocities of the Nazis and Stalin's Great Terror as the horrors of Second World War returned to Europe.
Ukrainian prosecutors said they had found 410 bodies in towns near the capital Kyiv. They said some witnesses were too traumatized to speak.

New Videos Show Ukraine Military War Crimes On Russian POWs
WNU Editor: There have been numerous calls for the International Criminal Court to investigate Russian military war crimes in Ukraine .... U.S. government formally accuses Russia of committing war crimes in Ukraine (CNBC). And it is getting worse .... Ukraine war: WHO says attacks on health facilities are rising daily (BBC).
I have seen the videos allegedly showing Ukrainian soldiers shooting and torturing Russian POWs. They are making the rounds on Russian social media with hundreds of thousands of views (if not more). Needless to say the Russian government is permitting the widespread dissemination of these videos as a warning to Russian soldiers on why they should not surrender. And while it is impossible to independently verify the content of these videos, I concur with a BBC reporter's conclusions that the Criminal Court will need to expand its investigations.

The U.S. military covered up 2019 airstrikes in Syria that killed up to 64 women and children, a possible war crime, during the battle against Islamic State, according to a new report.
The two back-to-back airstrikes near the town of Baghuz were ordered by a classified American special operations unit tasked with ground operations in Syria, the New York Times reported on Saturday.
'We just dropped on 50 women and children,' a shocked analyst watching drone footage of the strike in real time told colleagues on a secure chat system.

Former Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher Now Says Platoon Members Agreed 'To Do Medical Scenarios On ISIS Prisoner Until He Died'
In the podcast interview, Gallagher continued to deny that he stabbed the fighter. He claimed, instead, that the SEALs did not treat the fighter for his injuries and jointly decided to practice medical procedures on him until he died

* He has now claimed his entire platoon agreed to kill the captured fighter as part of a plan to practice medical procedures on him
* Prosecutors claimed during his trial that Gallagher briefly treated the ISIS fighter by inserting a breathing tube in his neck after being injured in an airstrike
* Gallagher's platoon members told investigators they then saw Gallagher stab the fighter in the neck several times
* He has always claimed the war crimes charges brought against him were made up by six platoon members who wanted to force him out
* His attorney claims that prosecutors already knew that the SEALs had practiced medical procedures on the ISIS fighter before he was pronounced dead
* The knowledge that the fighter was used for medical training was detailed as part of a defense motion filed back in 2019 and also in other court documents
Former Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher, who was found not guilty of murdering an injured ISIS detainee, has now claimed his entire platoon agreed to kill the captured fighter as part of a plan to practice medical procedures on him.
The 41-year-old retired SEAL made the bombshell admission in an interview on Apple's 'The Line' podcast on Tuesday regarding the 2017 death of a 17-year-old militant captive in Iraq.
'The grain of truth in the whole thing is that that ISIS fighter was killed by us and that nobody at that time had a problem with it,' he said.

Amnesty International: Eritrean Forces Are Committing Ethnic Cleansing In The Tigray Region Of Ethiopia
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Amnesty International accused Eritrean forces on Friday of killing hundreds of civilians in northern Ethiopia over 24 hours last year, an incident it described as a potential crime against humanity.
Eritrea rejected the accusations. But an Ethiopian state human rights body issued a statement that also described such killings, though with fewer details.
It was a rare official acknowledgment from Ethiopia that Eritrean troops participated in the conflict during the government’s crackdown in the Tigray region last year.
Amnesty said it had spoken to 41 witnesses who described the mass killings of “many hundreds of civilians” by Eritrean troops in Axum, an ancient city in northern Ethiopia.

Pentagon To Investigate Possible War Crimes Committed By Special Forces Troops

The Defense Department inspector general will examine whether elite U.S. commando forces are doing enough to comply with the laws of armed conflict and hold violators accountable.
For decades the Defense Department has relied on covert and classified special operations troops to kick in doors and raid high-value targets around the world. The department’s Inspector General’s Office now may be taking its first broad look at whether those shadowy strike forces committed war crimes along the way.
The office sent a memo on Monday to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and to Special Operations Command, advising them it was beginning an inquiry into whether the forces overseen by the command, which include the Navy SEAL teams, the Army’s Delta Force, Marine Raiders and other elite commandos, have programs in place to ensure they are following the law during combat, and whether they are reporting troops when those laws are broken.
The four-paragraph memo, which was first reported by Task & Purpose, could have seismic repercussions in the special operations community, current and former commandos and military legal experts say.
The Pentagon has come to rely heavily on special operations troops, who often conduct missions with little oversight, backed by a military and nation that often idolize the elite fighters. Accountability has at times been scant.

A prosecutor investigating crimes committed during Kosovo‘s 1998-99 independence war with Serbia has indicted Kosovo’s president, Hashim Thaçi, for crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The indictment was announced as Thaçi was on his way to Washington for a White House meeting with Serbia’s president organised by Richard Grenell, Donald Trump’s controversial ambassador to Germany who was also appointed as the administration’s Balkan peace envoy.
The meeting had been scheduled for Saturday, but Grenell announced on Twitter on Wednesday evening that Thaçi had cancelled his visit following the announcement. “I respect his decision not to attend the discussions until the legal issues of those allegations are settled,” Grenell wrote. Kosovo’s new prime minister, Avdullah Hoti, will represent the country at the White House meeting.

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump imposed new travel and property sanctions Thursday on International Criminal Court officials, attempting to penalize them for investigating alleged wrongdoing by U.S. military personnel and intelligence operatives fighting against terrorism in Afghanistan over the past 18 years.
Trump declared a national emergency, calling the ICC investigation at The Hague “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
Trump’s order blocks an untold number of unnamed ICC officials from entering the U.S., and it keeps them from carrying out financial and property transactions in the U.S.

International Criminal Court Approves Afghan War Crimes Probe
DW: International court backs Afghan war crimes probe
Appeal judges at the International Criminal Court have given prosecutors the go-ahead to launch an investigation into alleged war crimes by Taliban, Afghan and US forces.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday authorized an investigation into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Afghanistan. The probe targets US, Afghan and Taliban forces as well as intelligence personnel.
The ruling came only days after the US and the Taliban signed an ambitious peace deal to end conflict in Afghanistan.
The Hague-based international court upheld an appeal by prosecutors against an earlier deision to block an investigation.

ABC News Online: Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi says genocide case brought against Myanmar 'misleading'
Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has said the case brought against her country at the World Court was "incomplete and misleading" as she began her defence to accusations of genocide against the Rohingya Muslim minority.
The Republic of The Gambia, a small West African country, launched the case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice, the UN's highest court, alleging it has violated the 1948 Genocide Convention.
Leading Myanmar's defence herself at the court in The Hague, Ms Suu Kyi acknowledged disproportionate force may have been used at times by the military, but said the conflict in the western Rakhine state was "complex and not easy to fathom".

BBC: UK government and military accused of war crimes cover-up
The UK government and armed forces have been accused of covering up the killing of civilians by British troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
An investigation by BBC Panorama and the Sunday Times has spoken to 11 British detectives who said they found credible evidence of war crimes.
Soldiers should have been prosecuted for the killings, say insiders.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said it rejected the unsubstantiated allegation of a pattern of cover-ups.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told the BBC "all of the allegations, that had evidence, have been looked at".
He said "the right balance" had been struck over decisions whether or not to investigate alleged war crimes.

President Trump has granted clemency to two Army officers accused or convicted of war crimes and restored Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher to the rank of chief petty officer after he was docked a pay grade after being convicted of posing for a photo with a dead Islamic State (ISIS) fighter, the White House announced Friday.
Army 1st Lt. Clint Lorance could be released from the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as soon as Friday evening, six years after being found guilty of second-degree murder. Maj. Matt Golsteyn, a former Green Beret, will have the murder charge against him dropped.
