Commentary From the Modesto Bee:
The 84 percent victory of pro-autonomy forces in last week's referendum called by Bolivia's wealthy eastern province of Santa Cruz in open defiance of that country's central government has triggered fears of a chain reaction of separatist movements throughout Latin America.
The leftist governments of Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Cuba lashed out against the Santa Cruz autonomy vote, claiming it represents the beginning of a U.S. effort to dismember politically independent Latin American countries and create new pro-American states in the region.

My Comment: Socialist economic models simply do not work. In Latin America it becomes particularly ugly because the intention of Socialist governments in Bolivia, Venezuela, and Ecuador is to follow the Cuban political model. Government for life with no tolerance for dissent.(I do not include Nicaragua in this mix.)
The fact that large groups and major population centers are now protesting against the idea of centralizing power into the hands of a central government should be no surprise. 2008 is going to be a pivotal year. Will the Central Governments of these states crack down on dissent ..... or ..... if they are smart .... come to a compromise and accommodation. Only time will tell.
In my opinion, when one looks at the egos of these men .... the Castro brothers .... Chavez ..... Morales .... these men and their policies are the same .... therefore expect conflict.
