WASHINGTON -- Although the "war on terrorism" remains a consuming focus of the U.S. government, the Bush administration appears poised to leave behind a situation not unlike the one it inherited nearly eight years ago: a resurgent Al Qaeda ensconced in South Asia, training new recruits, plotting attacks against the West, and seemingly beyond the United States' reach.

My Comment: As I have mentioned many ties in this blog, many elements of Pakistani society have been active in supporting our enemies. Many attempts to change this mindset have been met with indifference at best, vehement opposition at worse.
If a future 9/11 terrorist strike against the homeland or Europe has fingerprints that can be traced back to Pakistan, the consequences will be very severe.
