Russia China Border Agreement Reached

Russia Gives Territory To China -- News.com.au

RUSSIA has ended a decades-old border dispute with China by giving it a stretch of river island territory in a ceremony symbolising the Cold War rivals' warming ties.
Chinese and Russian flags were raised and new border markers erected as part of the handover at China's far north-eastern tip near the Russian city of Khabarovsk, Interfax news agency reported.

A Russian border guard unit withdrew from what is now Chinese territory, leaving behind an empty headquarters and barracks buildings, Interfax said.

Under an agreement signed by the two countries' foreign ministers in July, Russia agreed to give up Tarabarov Island, known as Yinlong in Chinese, and half of Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island, called Heixiazi in Chinese.

My Comment: Tensions on this border region have been present for decades. This is a big step to diffuse them, and is a symbol of the thawing of relations between the two countries.

Or it may be a realization in Moscow that China has a 10-1 demographic advantage and is for all practical purposes in charge in Eastern Siberia legally or not. They are at this time ripping large tracts of natural resources; stuffing them on rail cars and shipping it back under the well greased hands of Russian Border Troops. Russia hasn't defused anything; it's just increased the likelihood that its neighbor will continue to take larger and larger bites.
