Refugee Crisis In War Torn Congo Gets Worse

Congo: Rebels Clash With Army -- The New York Times:

Congolese Army tanks pounded rebel-held hilltops on Tuesday and repelled an attack on a military base in the east in the latest round of fighting, which has displaced 150,000 people in six weeks, the United Nations said. The army fired at rebel positions during a two-day battle at Tongo in North Kivu Province that killed and wounded civilians in a nearby camp for internal refugees, the United Nations peacekeeping mission said. In North Kivu, the Congolese Army is battling the forces of a renegade Tutsi general, Laurent Nkunda, whose peace deal with the government collapsed in August. The fighting has forced about 100,000 civilians from their homes. In addition, 50,000 people have fled fighting in the Ituri district, in the northeast, near the border with Sudan, between the Congolese Army and the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel force from Uganda.
