Australia's Relationship With An Obama Administration


Obama To Ask For Troops In 'War We Need To Win' -- Sydney Morning Herald

KEVIN RUDD is "a man of the times" whose ideas will be welcomed by the US administration of Barack Obama, an adviser to his presidential campaign said.

But the first priority of the new administration's dealings with Australia will be to seek help in winning the war in Afghanistan, Jeffrey Bader told the Herald.

"Obama and Kevin Rudd already have the beginnings of a relationship through earlier conversations," he said.

"Kevin is seen here as a man of the times. So we start with good personal connections."

Mr Bader, a former official for the US State Department, the National Security Council and the office of the US Trade Representative, is a China expert for the Brookings Institution and advised the Obama campaign on Asia policy. He said the new administration would welcome Mr Rudd's ideas on China, climate change and Asia-Pacific diplomacy, but Afghanistan would be most urgent.
