BAGHDAD – The Iraqi government's Shiite bloc reached an agreement Thursday with a group of mostly Sunni lawmakers who wanted concessions in return for supporting a proposed security pact with the U.S., senior lawmakers said.
The 275-seat Parliament was preparing to vote later Thursday on the security pact that will let U.S. forces stay in Iraq for three more years, as well as the agreement with the Sunni-led legislators, said Shiite lawmakers Khalid al-Attiyah, Sami al-Askari and Ali al-Adeeb.
The lawmakers did not detail the agreement with the Sunnis, but said it does not include two key Sunni demands: the repeal of a law designed to weed out former members of Saddam Hussein's Baath party, and the dissolution of a special court that tried the dictator and top officials of his regime. Saddam was sentenced to death and executed in 2006.
