Mideast Peace Deal Unlikely By Year's End: White House

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A Middle East peace deal is unlikely in 2008, the White House said Thursday, acknowledging openly and explicitly for the first time what would be a major diplomatic disappointment.

"We do not think that it's likely that it would happen before the end of the year," US President George W. Bush's chief spokeswoman, Dana Perino, told reporters.

"We realize that, with the political changes that have happened in Israel over the passed couple of months, and really since early summer that that started, that the prospects of being able to get one done became more unlikely," she said.
