From The Telegraph:

The defection of a high-ranking African National Congress luminary to a breakaway rival has given new hope that effective single-party rule in the country is over.

Allan Boesak, a prominent anti-apartheid campaigner, caused consternation in the ranks of South Africa's ruling party when he joined the Congress of the People, formed last week by disaffected ANC supporters.

The furore over his departure has exposed the rancorous divisions besetting the country since the former president, Thabo Mbeki, was ousted as ANC leader by Jacob Zuma last year.

As South Africans grow increasingly disillusioned with poverty and rampant crime, there is a real possibility that the ANC will lose the absolute grip on power it has enjoyed since the end of white rule in 1994.

My Comment: The ANC is just a shadow of its former self. It's failure on the economic arena, corruption, tribal tensions, a blind eye towards the horrors that are happening in Zimbabwe, an AIDs policy that is truly medieval, high crime .... for all practical purposes the Government has failed everywhere with the exception of enriching themselves.

As the opposition parties bound together, the ANC government will be under threat. How they will react to this threat will give an indication of where South Africa is going. Will they be like every other Africa country .... fixing the environment to ensure perpetual rule, or will they let the original democratic goals as outlined in the original peace agreement between the ANC and the government be followed. If I was a betting man, I will bet that the ANC will be following the typical failed African model.
