China's President Rejects Democracy

President Hu Jintao has rejected Western-style democracy as a model for China.

But in a speech marking the 30th anniversary of economic and social reforms that have transformed China into the world's fourth largest economy, Mr Hu insisted that "development"inspired by outside influences was crucial to the country's prospects.

"We must draw on the beneficial fruits of humankinds's political civilisation, but we will never copy the model of the western political system," he said.
