MI5 Chief: Terror Plots Against UK Have Fallen -- Yahoo News/AP

LONDON – Terrorists based in Britain have plotted fewer attacks against the U.K. over the last 18 months — but the overall threat from terrorism remains severe, the head of Britain's MI5 domestic intelligence agency was quoted as saying Wednesday.

MI5 director-general Jonathan Evans was quoted by several British newspapers as saying that senior al-Qaida leaders overseas are still trying to recruit Brits for attacks. Evans also said small, terrorist cells located in Britain are a threat.

However, Evans said that increased surveillance and the successful prosecution of terrorists had forced extremists to limit their activities, the newspapers reported.
