A Petition To The Navy Re: Congressman John Murtha -- Pajamas Media
When I read the following email, I clicked posthaste on the link to sign the petition. (I don’t think I’ve ever been number 4 on a petition before, but the outrage was immediate. I think when you read it, you will want to sign too. But if by some remote chance you dither, remember this video of the man our Navy has seen fit to celebrate. But read the email first. That should suffice.)
Friends,
Congressman John Murtha was recently awarded the Department of the Navy’s highest public service award for non-employees by the Secretary of the Navy. This is an outrage. As you probably know, John Murtha has been the worst of a bad lot in Congress who exploited those serving in combat for political purposes. He was the most outspoken member of Congress in aggressively attacking Marines as “cold blooded killers” who “murdered women and children” after the Haditha incident in November, 2005, BEFORE AN INVESTIGATION WAS EVEN CONDUCTED. In fact, he slandered the Marines to such an extent, and with such disregard for the truth, that one of them sued him for libel (rumor says there’s another libel suit to come soon). It is inconceivable that the Secretary of the Navy would give such an award to such a man, yet it happened not two weeks ago with muted response. I have created an online petition to express our outrage and disgust and I’m asking you to join me in signing it. Please use the link below to visit the petition and sign it; it will take less than two minutes. Additionally, please send it on to everyone you know who cares about the reputation of our active duty military and combat veterans, we can’t allow this to pass by unnoticed. Once we receive enough signatures, it will be noticed. It is essential that you forward on the link to others, it’s the only way this will generate momentum. Please take a few minutes to make sure that this petition doesn’t stop with you.

My Comment: And Congress wants to know why their approval ratings are always in the cellar? This award is nothing more but trying to satisfy a Congressman's ego. Shame to the U.S. Navy brass for giving this award in the hope that he will accommodate their budgetary needs when the 2010 budget is decided upon in the next few weeks.
Between you and me .... Congressman's John Murtha is more concerned about himself and his friends than what the Navy may want. This PR stunt by the Navy is just that .... and it will be perceived and accepted by the public as that.

Yet he just pushed through the stop loss bonus and ensures every year that the troops get their COLA increase....never say what great things he does for the military!

Good comment. If someone gave me my COLA increase, I would have been happy camper to.
But he is one of many .... and they will not get this award.
Russell's campaign activity is now under investigation.
Russell's campaign violated the letter and the spirit of the "Open Letter" directive of Joint Chiefs of Staff head Adm. Michael Mullen in late Spring, in which he had admonished members of the military that they must remain apolitical. Russell appeared in the media and raised funds, while actively serving in the Reserves; on his campaign website and in brochures, he was pictured in uniform, and identified as Lt. Col. William Russell: These are violations of Article 88 and Article 92 of the Military Code.
Russell's campaign activity is now under investigation by the Judge Advocate General and Inspector General of the Command of the U.S. Army Reserves in Ft. McPherson, Georgia. Public affairs acting chief Scott Ferguson informed this news service on Sept. 4 that the probe will not be completed "for months," despite the election scheduled for Nov. 4—and that no information will be made public before the entire investigation is completed. The slow-paced investigation is not the first favor that Russell has received from a right-wing faction in the military. During his activation from approximately April 1 to July 31, he was assigned to a chemical unit in Johnstown—where he wished to run for Congress—despite the fact that this was outside his military occupational specialty. The question of who arranged this for his campaign is one of the issues under investigation.
Russell will have to answer to the new Secretary of the Army to these and many other questions about his conduct while on active duty.
Russell's Fundraising Profile
Russell's campaign raised $918,000 from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2008, from individuals through direct mail, according to his Federal Election Commission (FEC) reports. In the 1st Quarter 2008, only $34,409 of $214,168—16%—of that was "itemized"—with names, addresses, employers, and occupations reported. Only 8% of the identified contributors of that $34,000 were from Pennsylvania—a sampling which shows that a national mailing list of "Swift Boat" donors was used to foist Russell on the 12th Congressional District.
In the 2nd Quarter, only $137,835 of $669,534—21%—of the money raised, was itemized. Only 10% of the contributors were from Pennsylvania, providing another sampling which shows that out-of-state money is being raised to defeat Murtha and install a carpetbagger.
On May 15, FEC campaign finance analyst Robin Kelly wrote to Russell's treasurer: "Your report disclosed $185,575.09 in unitemized contributions...." She required the campaign to either amend the report with more data, or to "clarify that for the contributions in question, the aggregate total ... for each contributor does not exceed $200." FEC spokesman Bob Birkenstock told EIR that the fact that the FEC sent the inquiry, showed that the Commission considered the campaign's high number of un-itemized contributions to be unusual.
Russell's Unauthorized Use of Fisher House Foundation name and logo.
Russell's campaign is now under investigation by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office for referencing the Fisher House Foundation and it's logo in the campaign literature and communications. Russell used these for his campaign event, "Bill Russell's Hot Dog Day." Fisher House told Russell they would not accept any proceeds resulting from this unauthorized event. Peg Luksik, Russell's campaign manager, instructed his volunteer workers to take money at this event or to write a check to Fisher House and mail it to the campaign's Post Office box. Neither the disbursements nor the receipts for Bill Russell's Hot Dog Day have been reported to the Federal Elections Commission. Where is the money Russell and Luksik?
