U.S. Moves To Beef Up Border Security -- Houston Chronicle
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration plans to deploy additional federal law enforcement agents to the U.S.-Mexico border to choke off southbound shipments of automatic weapons and cash drug proceeds that are fueling the Mexican cartels’ murderous resistance to Mexico President Felipe Calderon.
The early phases of a new border offensive already are under way in Texas where federal authorities have seized rifle barrels, firearms accessories and gunpowder in a tractor-trailer attempting to cross into Mexico at Pharr, weapons and ammunition hidden in a truck trying to enter Mexico from Laredo, and $3.2 million in suspected cartel cash shipments since March 1.

My Comment: This is an astounding figure. 700 drug related abductions alone in the city of Phoenix in the past two years. I would love to know what are the figures nationwide .... I am sure that those stats are also astounding.
We now know that since a significant portion of the U.S. Federal prison population are related to this war and the transportation and distribution of drugs .... I can only assume that the victims from this trade must rise to the tens if not hundreds of thousands of people. Killings, injuries, threats, crimes committed to get money to buy drugs .... this total is in the millions.
As the deaths from Mexico's Drug Cartel war escalates, and fears along the border increases, I can assure you that this will kill any idea of immigration reform in the U.S, and it will also militarize the border regions.

When are we going to learn that prohibition of any item with such high demand breeds and encourages this type of black market and the market's propensity for violence. If the US wants to make a difference, a real difference, and end the needless bloodshed, we need to legalize, regulate and tax narcotics. State and federal agencies could find all of the funding they need just from the tax revenue and it takes the money, billions of it, out of the hands of thugs and killers. Myself, I don't have an interest in taking drugs. Those that do will continue to do so regardless of the legallity of it. So let's get smart, end the bloodshed and let the states make money they can put towards education and prevention.
Agreed! who hurts society more? the drunk after a bottle of whiskey or the stoner after a couple of joints. Who knows a "violent drunk" or someone who has an awful habit of abusing his or her spouse/children because of alcohol. Or maybe you know a group of guys that like to beat each other up after a long night of drinking or maybe race there cars home...All ridiculous ways of life. Marijuana SPECIFICALLY is not a danger to society, how many "violent stoners" are there HAHA it even sounds funny. It's no mor of a gateway drug than alcohol really. Prohibition is just another word for illegal and how much money does the government make off of Liquor taxes. How much do we pay for liquor related damages, just go ask someone who works for M.A.D.D. they'll give you some statistics....
Legalize it them now. Then if some idiot wants to ruin their own life let it be taxed. It's their choice. Keeping it illegal is killing innocent people caught in the middle. It's wasting money and our government apparently needs all the revenue it could get right now.
I have always been a strong opponent in legalizing drugs. My reasoning comes from studying U.S. history, in particular when opiates like heroin and other narcotics like cocaine were legal from after the civil war to the beginning of the 20th century. At the time it was estimated that 2% of the population were heavy addicts, and the social and medical costs were horrendous.
But when I look and study at what the situation is like today, I am witnessing something even worse. A huge part of population is now dependent on drugs. This dependency is creating civil and cross borders wars in Latin America. It provides the funding for vicious and brutal gangs to operate with impunity, with the cost now running into the tens of thousands killed each year, the imprisonment of hundreds of thousands, and the destabilization of entire governments.
A new strategy and policy is needed now. The old ways are not working anymore.
