Hillary Clinton Defends US Re-Engagement With Russia -- The Telegraph
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has defended the Obama administration’s re-engagement with Russia, and said that the thaw in relations did not mean that the United States was abandoning its allies.
The Secretary of State, who met her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, in Geneva yesterday, said she hoped for a fresh start. However, before the meeting she acknowledged divisions remained on Nato expansion and Russia’s relations with its neighbours.
“We will not recognise the breakaway areas of Georgia, we do not recognise any sphere of influence on the part of Russia and their having some kind of veto power over who can join the EU or who can join Nato,” Mrs Clinton said.
