A proposed bill that would give the president widespread power to shut down the Internet in the event of a cyberattack could have sweeping implications on civil liberties.
The days of an open, largely unregulated Internet may soon come to an end.
A bill making its way through Congress proposes to give the U.S. government authority over all networks considered part of the nation's critical infrastructure. Under the proposed Cybersecurity Act of 2009, the president would have the authority to shut down Internet traffic to protect national security.

My Comment: I have talked about this issue before .... but unlike before, these proposals are now one step closer to becoming law. My view on this issue is simple .... I never thought that I would see in my lifetime the U.S. abdicating many of the rights and freedoms that it has always held dear.
The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 is the path by which the Government will now regulate the internet .... and it will be Government that will decide on whether this free flow of information can continue or be curtailed according to what the Government deems to be worthwhile.
