Taliban Insurgents Ambush U.S. Patrol In Afghan Village -- McClatchy Newspapers

GONDALABUK, Afghanistan — A platoon from the 1st Infantry Division's 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery Regiment and another from the Illinois Army National Guard drove up the lone road into the village of Doab in 16 Humvees, accompanied by four truckloads of Afghan police officers and soldiers on an "overnight patrol."

For the first 20 hours, all had gone smoothly.

It wasn't until midnight on the day they'd arrived last month in the isolated village that translators listening to three languages — Dari, Kata and Pashai — heard chatter that indicated that insurgents were preparing an ambush.

My Comment: Calling up 300 fighters to attack the Americans. Knowing where to attack ... and knowing when to attack (i.e. aircraft leaving the battlefield for refueling). This takes logistics, intelligence, planning, and a sophisticated command structure to coordinate all of these elements .... this is not a rag tag group of fighters who are undisciplined and disorganized.

The fact that no Afghan police or government official made any noise or warning on what was about to happen .... this is also not a very good sign.

General Petraeus is right .... Afghanistan is not going to be easy.
