Gurkhas In Britain: A Timeline Of Their Campaign To Stay

Veteran Gurkhas have fought long and hard for the right to settle in Britain, the country for which they were prepared to lay down their lives.

Here is a timeline of their campaign:

October 2004: The Government announces that current serving Gurkha soldiers will have the right to stay in the UK after four years service in the Army. But the new rule will not apply to veterans who served before July 1997 when their base moved from Hong Kong to Kent.

March 2007: The Ministry of Defence announces serving soldiers will get the same pension as their British counterparts. But again the new rule will not apply to veterans who served before July 1997.

My Comment: Soldiers who serve and sacrifice for your country should always be treated as citizens .... how these older Gurkhas have been treated is both shameful and a disgrace.
