Special Forces Fly Secondhand Skies in Africa

A few years back, I traveled to the southern edge of the Sahara to watch an Army Special Forces team train soldiers of Mali. It was a classic “foreign internal defense” mission: The Special Forces trainers were schooling a motorized Malian unit equipped with pickup trucks, a few aging Soviet armored vehicles, and a grab-bag of Kalashnikov and SKS rifles. The Malian unit policed the country’s 5th Military Region: a vast territory that stretches from Timbuktu to the borders of Algeria and Mauritania.
