KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudanese forces repelled a rebel attack on a northern Darfur military base — the second in about a week — in fighting that killed more than 60 people over the weekend, Darfur peacekeepers and government officials said.
About 350 residents of the surrounding town, Umm Baru, sought refuge outside the peacekeepers' base just outside the town, said Kemal Saiki, a spokesman for the United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission. He said Tuesday that most of them were elderly people, women and children.
