Obama Says Iran's Energy Concerns Legitimate

LONDON -- President Barack Obama suggested that Iran may have some right to nuclear energy _ provided it proves by the end of the year that its aspirations are peaceful.

In a BBC interview broadcast Tuesday, he also restated plans to pursue direct diplomacy with Tehran to encourage it set aside any ambitions for nuclear weapons it might harbor.

Iran has insisted its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity. But the U.S. and other Western governments accuse Tehran of seeking atomic weapons.

Update: Obama hopeful on Mid-East peace -- BBC Interview

My Comment:The Israelis are not going to be happy with this interview. Whatever hope that they had on President Obama being forceful on Iran is now going away like a puff of smoke. It would not be a surprise to me if I should learn that Israel is now looking at its Iran options independent from the U.S. (if they are not doing so right now).
