Strategist: Killer Drones Level Extremists’ Advantage

From The Danger Room:

A U.S. Predator strike in Pakistan’s tribal region on Sunday reportedly killed five people. It was the latest in an ongoing killer-drone campaign that Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called “very effective” at taking apart extremist organizations.

But aid groups, think tanks and the Pakistani and Afghan governments — not to mention angry mobs of everyday people — have objected to the strikes. Drones and other aircraft often inadvertently kill innocent civilians, along with the extremist fighters. Gareth Porter notes that no one outside of the Obama administration even knows, for sure, how many people have died in drone attacks; according to one disputed Pakistani account, the number could be as high as 687. Even Mullen acknowledged that unmanned strikes “have to be done in a way that moves the strategy forward and doesn’t back us up.”

My Comment: In the past year U.S. hunter killer teams have been very effective in eliminating numerous mid to high level Taliban and Al Qaeda commanders. They are obviously creating a sense of paranoia and fear in the minds of their enemy .... as well as being successful in making them realize that they cannot trust anyone .... that they must always be on the move so that they cannot be targeted and eliminated.

This alone has probably disrupted numerous attacks and operations .... but unfortunately .... these operations have also produced a high casualty rate in civilians.
