India announced this week that it is in the market for a national warplane, sparking a faceoff among the most formidable warplane manufacturers. Here are six planes that are contenders—they're some of the best multirole military aircraft in the world today.

In international arms sales, winning is everything. The Indian military is seeking 126 jets that can dogfight and drop bombs, and defense officials there announced this week that they will begin a year-long series of field trials in August. The price for all of the planes will approach $10.5 billion, making it the largest international opportunity for military airplane manufacturers expected for years. Many international companies have already offered bids, including American companies Boeing and Lockheed Martin. But some diplomacy was needed to clear ground rules for the U.S. defense giants in case they win the contract. Earlier this week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed a defense pact with India that will help U.S. defense companies sell military wares to India. The agreement sets standards on how the United States can monitor the way some sensitive equipment is used—until this week a sticking point in any deal for these U.S. warplanes. My Comment: The Mig-35 looks impressive, but the F-16 is reliable. It is a toss-up between these two planes.
