Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, right, and U.S. President Barack Obama have a walk at the Kremlin, with the Tsar Cannon built in 1586 in the background, in Moscow, Russia, Tuesday, July 7, 2009. (AP Photo/RIA-Novosti, Dmitry Astakhov, Presidential Press Service)From The Jamestown Foundation:
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a significant military transit agreement with Barack Obama during the summit in Moscow on July 6. The agreement was forged in the context of reaching an understanding to commit both countries to nuclear arms reductions of up to one third, issuing a joint statement on missile defense (which remains unresolved), forming bilateral presidential commissions to expand future cooperation across a broad range of issues, and resuming bilateral military cooperation (suspended after the Russia-Georgia war in August 2008). To that end, Moscow has agreed to expand the transit of military and non-military supplies across Russian territory to U.S. troops in Afghanistan (Rossiya TV, July 6).

My Comment: The key phrase in this report is the following:
.... as the independent military analyst Alexander Golts observed, "if something goes wrong in Russian-U.S. relations, this transit will cease as quickly and suddenly as it started" (AP, July 3; ITAR-TASS, July 4).
So the following question begs for an answer .... what must the U.S. give up to have this valuable corridor through Russia.
Hint .... think missile defense and a reduction in U.S. nuclear delivery systems.

And the worst is yet to come- In ‘78 Jimmy Carter met with Brezhnev, extending his hand in friendship much as Obama is doing in Russia today. After seeing what kind of a zero they were dealing with firsthand, the Soviet Union promptly invaded Afghanistan- in direct violation of promises made to Carter in Moscow six months earlier.
It is hard to imagine today’s Kremlin being cowed or intimidated after meeting with a smiley plastic mannequin like Obama, putting his arm around them and schmoozing all the time- they know he’s not going to do anything.
Yes We Can invade Ukraine… and what are you going to do about it?
