Canada: The New Global Drug Lord
From Macleans:
Canada is a leading producer, and exporter, of illegal synthetic drugs
The United States and its allies have been prosecuting the war on drugs for almost a century. They have never looked like they’re winning but they have carried on regardless. In the past year, however, the supporters of drug prohibition have suffered some important tactical defeats. The bipartisan consensus in Washington, although still powerful, is beginning to slip. But there is a strategic issue now facing supporters of prohibition that presents them with their toughest challenge yet, and Canada will be a key battleground. This will unfold in the next decade and may bring an end to the war on drugs, which has consistently failed to achieve its stated aims despite devouring hundreds of billions of taxpayers’ dollars.

My Comment: A personal story. I bought a chalet and a large piece of land with a good size lake in the Laurentians of Quebec 25 years ago. At that time the French Quebecois locals who lived there were on welfare, living in old run down homes, and driving 15 year old pick-ups. Waterfront property sold for $1,000/acre, and everything was very cheap.
Today .... the marijuana grow-ops and meth drug production has made the Laurentians wealthy, expensive to live, and rich. Shacks have been replaced with million dollar homes. Pick-ups replaced by massive Dodge Rams. Government welfare a thing of the past.
A good friend of mine who is also the "Chief" of the Provincial Police in the region put it to me bluntly .... when they go into a home for one reason or another, there is a 30% chance that they will find a grow-op inside.
The market for these drugs is the States .... and there is no limit to the demand.
So .... is Canada the new Global Drug Lord.
I have to say yes. Lax criminal prosecutions coupled with easy access to drug materials and resources makes this an ideal place to be in the drug business .... and many people are.
30% of a population being involved in the drug trade. That is an astounding figure.
