A ‘Light’ Fighter To Out-Perform the Air Force’s Tank-Killer -- The Danger Room

In July, the Air Force announced it would buy up to 100 small, affordable, “light” fighters, to equip a new counter-insurgency wing. The announcement represented four years of soul-searching by an air service torn between today’s fights and tomorrow’s. No one doubts the Air Force’s prowess in waging large-scale, industrial warfare against other armies. But in the fight against extremists and insurgents, the Air Force’s speedy, high-tech fighters often represent major over-kill. Sometimes, lower-tech is better.
