In June, Somalia’s U.S.-backed Transitional Federal Government established a new naval force to fight pirates. Somalia hasn’t had a navy or coast guard since the beginning of a brutal civil war in 1991. The TFG recruited 500 young men, pictured, paid them $60 a month from foreign-donated funds, and put in charge Farah Ahmed Omar, a naval officer from the pre-1991 regime.
Some analysts and observers are skeptical. “He has no men, no boats, and virtually no coastline,” Robert Farley said of Omar.
My Comment: It is a small force .... with very little equipment .... but it is a start and a stepping stone to bigger things.
This is a good overview of one of the methods being used in combating the Somali pirate problem .... read the whole thing.
