WNU Editor: I met Dr. Borlaug in the early 1980s at a presentation that he was giving at McGill University. It was rather dry .... talking about genetics and rice production. But he said the following which has always stuck in my mind ....
Man can never understand peace if they are always hungry.
When I had the chance to travel the world, I noticed that in conflict zones hunger was always the catalyst that provided the environment for wars to start and flourish. The more that I saw, the more that I realized that without exception .... Dr. Borlaug was right.
Hunger, food, wars and peace .... they are all intertwined.
A great man died this weekend, and his legacy will be with mankind long after you and I are gone from this planet.
