U.S. Army Works 'To Get Ahead' of Drawdown -- Defense News

The U.S. Army has begun slowly removing thousands of pieces of equipment from Iraq, from large items such as Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles to smaller items such as ammunition and clothing, as the earliest phase of the large-scale drawdown of forces anticipated in 2011 begins, service leaders said.

"We've been drawing down to get ahead of the official executive order for 2011," said Brig. Gen. John Wharton, commanding general, Army Materiel Command/ Southwest Asia.

My Comment: The sentence that caught my eye was the following ....

Overall, the Third Army oversees $63 billion worth of gear, said Brig. Gen. Phillip McGhee, Director of Resource Management Third Army at U.S. Army Central under CentCom.

$63 billion .... The Third Army is not cheap.
