The Mess In Closing Gitmo

Obama's Gitmo Blame Game -- Politico

Greg Craig, the top in-house lawyer for President Barack Obama, is getting the blame for botching the strategy to shut down Guantanamo Bay prison by January — so much so that he’s expected to leave the White House in short order.

My Comment: Long time readers of this blog know that I have been critical of the closing date for Gitmo. To do a proper job .... I repeat .... to do a proper job, vetting and examining each case file will need to be done. Choosing an alternative site in the U.S. will need to be done. Realizing that current laws will need to be changed to put to trial some of these inmates .... this has to be done. Getting the necessary political support abroad to accept some of these detainees will need to be done.

All of these things need to be done .... but they have not been done.

Heads are going to roll .... and I guess Greg Craig will be the first. But the real person who should be blamed for this fiasco is President Obama. He should never have put an arbitrary date for closing the facility .... now his administration will look both incompetent and amateurish.

I still believe that something can be salvaged from this mess, but instead of providing leadership from the White House we are now getting the blame game .... and Washington politics as usual.
