ABUJA — A key militant leader from the oil-rich Niger Delta on Thursday formally accepted an amnesty offer in a meeting with Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua.

Tom Ateke, leader of Niger Delta Vigilante, an ethnic Ijaw militia group, and his followers are now expected to surrender their arms under the amnesty programme.

"Today, Tom Ateke, you have given me my 49th independence anniversary gift and I cherish it so much," Yar'Adua said as he welcomed Tom and his team in his Abuja office.
