Army Cancels Brigade's Deployment to Iraq -- CBS News/APDrawdown of U.S. Troops in Iraq Is Sped Up; NATO Calls for Reinforcements and More Resources for Afghanistan
(CBS/AP) The Pentagon is canceling plans to send a 3,500-member Army brigade to Iraq, a move that speeds the drawdown there and could free up forces as President Barack Obama considers sending new troops to Afghanistan.
The 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team from the 10th Mountain Division based in Fort Drum, New York, had been scheduled to relieve another combat brigade in Iraq in January.

My Comment: Why send forces to Iraq .... where for all intents and and purposes the war is over. They should be sent to where they are needed, a fact that has dawned upon the Pentagon.
If anyone should be going to Iraq right now .... it is trainers and MPs.

There are plenty of reasons to send troops to Iraq right now. The main one being to save the win we've accomplished there: a nation is not considered Democratic until its second consecutive national election -- that is coming up in January 2010 for Iraq. If we do not ensure that this election takes place, all the work we've done there is lost.
Also, what do you propose the American troops who are there right now do with all the open bases and all our American equipment that is there now? Trainers and MPs are not sufficient to close down and hand over all the bases we have there now and to send back all our stuff so it doesn't just get buried in the sand there, wasting taxpayers' money.
Those are just two huge missions we as Americans need to accomplish there -- we cannot leave those to the Iraqis because that would be irresponsible of us. The American troops there now are still training and working alongside the Iraqi police and military to protect the country and also provide much needed humanitarian project support.
