Taliban's Number 2 Leader Captured In Pakistan


US-Pakistan Operation Captures Taliban Commander -- Voice of America

U.S. and Pakistani officials say the top Taliban military commander has been captured and is in custody.


U.S. and Pakistani officials say a secret joint operation involving intelligence agents from both countries captured Afghanistan's top Taliban commander several days ago in Karachi.

Officials describe the Afghan commander, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, as second in influence only to the Taliban's founder, Mullah Muhammad Omar. They say he is the most important Taliban figure detained since the war in Afghanistan started in late 2001.

The Taliban in Afghanistan deny Baradar has been captured, calling the report a rumor and a diversion.
