The Afghan Side Of War -- New York Times
Last fall the Afghan reporter Najibullah Quraishi was surprised to find himself operating as an embedded journalist. He was not tagging along with the United States Marines or some other coalition force — he was on the other side of the war, riding in minivans and walking through dusty fields with a small unit of militants in Baghlan Province, north of Kabul.
Mr. Quraishi spent 10 days with Hezb-e-Islami insurgents after an unexpected invitation from one of their commanders, and the result is “Behind Taliban Lines,” an installment of PBS’s “Frontline” (on Tuesday night) that’s likely to inspire strong feelings. The 36-minute report, consisting of Mr. Quraishi’s film and narration written by “Frontline” producers, is presented with a studied neutrality but has the inevitable effect of humanizing the militants, which may be laudable to some American viewers while driving others around the bend.
