The colonial carve-up of Africa threw together some spectacularly ill-conceived states, not least of which was Sudan.

Britain ruled the continent’s biggest country in separate northern and southern pieces until a few years before independence, at which point a diverse and antagonistic collection of ethnic, religious and cultural groups were forced together.

The modern Republic of Sudan, which straddles the fault line between Arab and African, was always an awkward union. Now it seems destined for a messy divorce.
