Soldier Dies in New Bangkok Violence -- Wall Street Journal
BANGKOK—Tensions flared again in Bangkok Wednesday as a Thai soldier was killed in an apparent friendly fire incident and 18 other people were injured as thousands of troops and protesters faced off in a northern suburb.
The latest clashes came as antigovernment Red Shirt protesters attempted to step up their seven-weekslong protest for new elections by moving out from their main encampment at the heart of Bangkok's biggest shopping district. Their immediate target was to take down a military blockade to prevent more antigovernment protesters flowing into the capital, but the confrontation quickly turned violent as soldiers fired shots and tear-gas canisters into the air and into the crowd when protesters tried to remove barricades and razor wire that security forces had laid across a major road.
