Why No Outrage Over CIA Hit Lists And Targeted Killings?

David Cole, writing in the May 3, 2010, edition of the Nation, notices a curious silence about the Obama administration’s recent decision to green-light the targeted killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen hiding in Yemen who has allegedly encouraged and even planned terrorist attacks against Americans. “In our peculiar post-9/11 world,” he writes, “it is apparently less controversial to kill a suspect in cold blood than to hold him in preventive detention.”

My Comment: I voiced the same opinion a few weeks ago. Where is the outrage over the CIA drone attacks that are killing enemy combatants (and many civilians) in countries like Pakistan, Yemen, and who knows where else. The news that there is now a CIA hit list would have produced a media firestorm and scores of protests 20-30 years ago .... but today .... there is complete silence.

Kudos to Michael Totten and The Nation for pointing out this discrepancy.
