Sub Navigator Was Listening To iPod Before £60m Ship Crash -- The Daily Mail

The navigator of a US nuclear submarine was listening to his iPod when it collided with another ship, causing £60m damage.

Crew on board the attack sub USS Hartford had also rigged up loudspeakers to they could listen to music on duty, according to an official report.

Captain Commander Ryan Brookhart was relieved of his duties after the investigation revealed nearly ’30 tactical and watchstander errors’ which led to the ‘avoidable accident’.

My Comment: I hope to God that these men are (oopppssss ... I should say were) not our best sailors.

(1) You're late to the story; the submarine blogs had the report *months* before Drudge linked the Sun report.

(2) The guys who screw up, as here, are pretty much the same guys in every boat--there's a small margin for risk, and any good ship can screw up badly at any moment. They train folks who lead ships to realize that the guys who get in bad situations are not bad guys, they're as good as them--which is harder to accept but a more appropriate cautionary tale.
