China's Inherited Elite Is Stoking The Forces Of Envy

China's New Elite Is Stoking The Forces Of Envy -- Times Online

China Snaps At Its Junior Princelings.

Public anger is growing at the wealthy offspring of the communist elite who are poised to inherit their parents’ power.

THEY may look bland, studious, glamorous or dowdy, but the generation of younger men and women rising to power in China have two things in common — perfect ancestry and lots of money.

They are the new generation of “junior princelings” who stand to inherit power and wealth from their parents, the aristocracy of the communist system.

Their influence is everywhere. As strikes spread and workers fight for higher pay, public resentment is mounting against this group of privileged insiders.

My Comment: What a difference a generation makes. When I was in China as a guest of both the Federal and Provincial Governments in 1988, I knew that my hosts were powerful and (yes) very rich .... but they never flashed it. They dressed like everyone on the street (including me), their cars were simple Toyota mini-buses, and their homes and offices were simple and practical. But when they came to visit me, out came the nice suits, Platinum credit cards, and all the symbols of wealth and power.

The children who are inheriting this wealth and power are not showing any inhibitions .... and this is causing a backlash. For the moment, as China's economic engine continues to grow I expect such grumbling to only occur in the privacy of one's home .... but if there is an economic downturn and suffering .... all bets are off.
