Gen Stanley McChrystal's mockery of the French appeared to seal his fate in the eyes of Barack Obama, according to White House officials.
The first few paragraphs of the "Rolling Stone" article described Gen McChrystal and his aides engaging in profane, locker room jibes about his having to go to a dinner with a French minister. Mr Obama decided such disrespect to a key ally was unacceptable and he would have to go.
