Trying To Keep Sudan United Will Probably Lead To Civil War

Sudan’s Government Committed to Keeping the Country Unified -- Voice of America

A leading member of Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party told VOA President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir’s newly formed unity government is seeking to the keep the country whole during implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Rabie Abdulatti Obeid also said the government is preparing for the semi-autonomous south Sudan’s referendum scheduled for January 2011.

My Comment: The leadership in Khartoum have shown little if any interest to accept the most likely scenario that the country will be divided into two by next year. This unwillingness to accept this "reality" will probably result in civil war when it happens, but unlike Darfur, the South Sudanese are heavily armed and will probably put up a strong fight.
